Solms, president of the Center, a Federation of Jewish Agencies-United Fund constituent A $275,000 grant has been given the Geriatric Center by the National Institute of Mental Health, he said, to take advantage of a unique opportunity for the study when the agency's "Community Housing for the Elderly" opens this fall. Community Housing for the Elderly, first project of its kind, is designed to develop a method of meeting the problem of a vast number of old people of modest means who for various reasons can no longer live entirely inde- pendently, but who do not require costly full-time care in a cus- todial institution. With financial backing from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Develop- ment, the Geriatric Center is con- verting eight row houses near its main buildings into low-rent ef- ficiency apartments for elderly individuals or couples. The apartments will be ready this fall and winter for rental to people aged 65 and over, a total of 27 to 36 tenants. Nearly one-fourth ($2,000,000,000) of retail spending by Detroiters goes for groceries—the second big- gest consumer expenditures after housing. R63 Stating that there is a low prior- ity for religion and Jewish educa- tion in communities today, Klutz- nick said he wasn't sure that the community was right in putting priority on Israel itself. "If we can't find an answer to Jewish problems all over the world, then Israel is not necessarily the an- swer," he said. Klutznick called for a four-point program beginning with the recog- nition that there is a new wave of anti-Semitism beginning. There should be a new reordering of pri- orities to save people of the dia- spora and get them to help us support Israel, he said. Klutznick also suggested a reso- lution to provide a better Jewish education for the next generation and urged more lay people of the community to help the Jewish serv- ice organizations with the respon-, sibilities of the Jewish community. Klutznick spoke to more than 400 persons attending the annual Jewish Federation meeting. The 1971 Jewish Welfare campaign chairman announced that the com- munity had collected more than $4,800,000—over $1,000,000 more than in previous campaigns.
