Technion Experts Develop Pollution Control Methods

NEW YORK — Scientists at the
Technion, Israel Institute of Tech-
nology, have developed a method
to control the pollution of Israel's
major waer reservoir, Lake Kin-
neret (the Biblical Sea of Galilee
in the north of the country).
Laboratory tests and small-scale
field tests have already proved
successful, and now the research
team is seeking Israel government
help for tests on a large scale;
to determine which of two anti-
pollution methods would prove
most suitable.
Dr. Yoram Avnirmelech, head of
the soils and fertilizers laboratory
at the Technion, and a senior lee-

"I am sure that the answers
we have found to this problein
can be successfully applied in
other countries," said Dr. Avni-
melech.
In Israel the nitrates lie in the

soil of the Hula region, formerly
an inland lake and marsh area,
whose waters were drained and the
land reclaimed for cultivation. The
Jordan flows through the Hula,
where its waters are utilized for
irrigation before flowing into the
Kinneret.
Dr. Avnimelech said the former
marsh area in the Hula has a
unique type of soil, similar to corn-
post, which contains organic mate-
rial in different stages of decom-
position. This organic materal,
which holds large quantities of

nitrogen, has been stable as long
as it was covered by water.
Tests have shown that some half-
million tons of nitrogen lie in the
top soil of the former marsh area
alone. Between 2,000-5,000 tons of
nitrates are swept annually into
Lake Kinneret.
The nitrates have already influ-
enced the growth of algae, the
accumulation of organic matter
and the depletion of oxygen in the
water of the Kinneret, making the
water increasingly hazardous for
use as drinking water. The water
also is acquiring a bitter odor,
which will make Lake Kinneret in-
creasingly unpleasant for swim-
ming and for use as a recreation
area.

the major cause of pollution in the
lake is the thousands of tons of
poisonous nitrates which winter
rains and floods annually sweep
into the Jordan River, as it flows
south into Lake Kinneret. He add-
ed that the seepage of nitrates into
underground or surface water is
a world-wide problem.
