USSR Announces
Issue of Jewish
Folksong Volume
Russia's official news agency.
Novosti. has issued a bylined arti-
cle by Lev Fruchtman, announcing
Publication of Jewish folksongs in
Russia.
Fruchtman says he was told that
Soviet composers are writing
1 music for Jewish folksongs and
that Sovetskv Kompozitor Publish-
ing House plans to publish a new
collection of modern Jewish songs
by the composer Zinovy Shulman.
Fruchtman's article states:
The Muzyka (Music) Publishing
House issued a book of Jewish folk
songs composed by Lev Kogan,
with 11 songs, including "Reizale,"
"Oi Mame, Mame. Shlog Mich
Nit" (Oh Mother, Mother, Don't
Beat Me), "Kinder Yorn" (Child-
hood Years). "Moishele," "Mekhu-
tonim Geyen" (The In-Laws Are
Coming) and others.
Lev Kogan frequently performs
these songs in concert h a 11 s

The text, printed in Yiddish and
Russian, appeared in an edition
of 5,000.
Another collection of Jewish
songs recently came out in Moscow
entitled, "New Jewish Songs,"
which includes songs by Soviet
composers, words by modern Jew-
ish poets.
The collection, printed by the
Sovetsky Kompozitor (Soviet Com-
poser) Publishing House under the
editorship and with a foreword
by Dmitri Shostakovich, appeared
in 2,000 copies. The text is in Yid-
dish and Russian.
It was compiled by Zinovi Korn-
paneyets together with Lev Yam-
polsky, Vladimir Shainsky, Lev
Pulver, Otilla Lichtenstein, Lev
Kogan, Yan Frenkel and other
composers, words by Aron Ver-
gelis, Evsey Dries, Moisey Teif;
Matvey Grubian, and many other
famous poets.
