THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 14—Friday, August 27, 1971 Zand Thanks Press for Help Through Prof. Herbert Paper of the University of Michigan, who spearheaded the American cam- paign to secure his visa to settle in Israel. Prof. Mikhail Zand has sent thanks to the American press for the help it gave in the humani- tarian effort. Dr. Zand, who now is profes- sor of Iranian studies at the He- brew University in Jerusalem, is coming to this country to ad- dress two sessions of the annual convention of the Zionist Organi- zation of America, Sept. 2-4, in Pittsburgh. Expressing gratitude for assist- ance rendered in the protests against Soviet persecutions to which he was subjected and in be- half of those asking the right to emigrate to Israel. Prof. Zand's letter to the press, written from Jerusalem. states: "I should like to express my deepest and most sincere grati- tude to every one who protested against the unjustified arrest of 39 Jews in Moscow on March 26 (I was one of them). against the unlawful cancellation of the exit permits to Israel of all my family on the basis of the dubious privi- lege—dubious at any rate to those like us who wished to live in the Jewish state—of Soviet citizenship of which we had already been de- prived. am sure that only thanks to these protests my family and I are here today in the old-new land of our people. I am sure that only thanks to the protests against the Soviet "Judenfrage - policy and to the constant pressure exerted upon the Soviet authorities by world public opinion, the aliya ( `emigration to Israel') of Soviet Jewry, though small in compari- son to what it could be if the appli- cants for exit visas to Israel were to receive them, is continuing. If the pressure stops, the aliya will stop. too. "I shall never forget the great and noble help rendered to me by men of good will all over the world. I cannot forget. too, that thousands of my brothers and sisters struggling for their rights of repatriation to Israel are still in the Soviet Galut (`diaspora'). Help them and God will help you." Eban to Skip Paris Unless He's Officially Invited PARIS (JTA) — Israel Foreign Minister Abba Eban will spend several days in France in October, but according to current plans will carefully avoid this capital city. On Oct. 4, Eban is Scheduled to address the Council of Europe meeting in Strasbourg during its general debate on the Middle East. The council serves as a sort of European Parliament with an ad- visory. voice. Eban will probably drive straight to Strasbourg from Basle, Switzerland. These plans, Israeli circles explain, could be changed if the French government decided to use the opportunity of Eban's visit to invite him here for a meet- ing with his French counterpart, Maurice Schumann. Schumann has said he will meet Eban at the airport anytime, but Israel insists on an official invita- tion. Schumann is the only for- eign minister of a major European country not to have yet issued such an invitation. A Knesset delegation led by Speaker Reuvan Barkatt is due here Aug. 30 to attend the inter- parliamentary conference sched- uled for Sept. 4-9. Political cir- cles expect the Israeli group to use its stay here to expand con- tacts with French colleagues. I ntroducing the SOUTHEAST CAMPUS CENTER 13200 OAK PARK BLVD. • OAK PARK, MICH.
