ARRIVALS

DON AUSTIN'S

The Upland Hills Farm School,
for children aged 5-14, has opened
in Oxford, Mich., in response to a
growing demand for alternatives
to today's methods of public
education.
School (Erector Dr. Thomas
Hamil, a professor in the college
of education at Wayne State Uni-
versity, describes the philosophy
of the school as "environmental
learning through creative expres-
sion."
The school will be non-graded
and division into groups will be
based on interest rather than age.
Artisans and professionals will
visit and field trips are_ planned.
Two buses will take the school's
50-75 children from Detroit and
Oakland County areas to the 240-
acre farm, owned by Dorothy and
Knight Webster. Classes begin
Sept. 20.
A meeting for interested parents
will be held 7:30 p.m. Monday at
the Upland Hills Farms, 481
George, Oxford. For information,
call Dr. Hamil, 628-1611.

True Love of Couple

Love will conquer all.
That's what 22-year-olds Debbie
Brackman of Long Island and
Valery Krenniov of the Soviet
republic of Azerbaijan are betting
on their wedding day Tuesday.
Miss Brackman, a Jewish Rus-
sian-studies student at Barnard
College, New York, met her future
husband last year when she
studied Russian in Leningrad. The
romance was carried on through
the mails.
A storybook puzzling ending is
precluded, however, for both
know that Krenniov, a third-
year student at Leningrad's
Medical Institute, will probably
never be allowed to leave the
Soviet Union.
Under his country's regulations,
he must continue to live in his
dormitory, is barred from renting
an apartment in Leningrad and
cannot transfer back to a school
in his native Baku.
As it stands, the future Mrs.
Krenniov will return to the U.S.
without a husband for at least four
years. She will not be able to live
with Krenniov and must travel
as a tourist back and forth be-
tween New York and Leningrad
to visit, until his graduation in
1975. Miss Brackman said she
does not intend to give up her
U.S. citizenship.
Undaunted, the couple look for,
ward to their $2 ceremony in a
chandeliered "wedding palace" in
Leningrad.
"It's gonna be difficult," the
bride-elect admits. But her mother,
Mrs. Arthur Brackman, adds: "The
bond between human beings is
the most important thing."
