The term "Tel Aviv" is de-
rived from the Hebrew name of
Theodor Herzl's German work
"Alt Neuland." . In German the
word means "The Old New
Land." In old Accadian language
the word means "The Hill of
Ruin." Such is its meaning in the
Biblical book of Ezekial (3:15).
The basic meaning of the word
indicates that a new civilization
was to be built out ..of the mound
of ruin left by the old civilization.
Such, indeed, was the indication
of Israel's bustling city, which
pioneers of old and immigrants of
today are ever building up as if
a new life was being created out
of the ruins of ancient history.
