Giant Cranes Move Israel Exports

Israel Bonds, which have provided more than $1,700,000,000 for
Israel's economic development during the past two decades, have
enabled Israel to expand agricultural production from $83,000,000 in
1950 to $545,000,000 last year, while industrial production rose even
more sharply, from $390,000,000 to $3,050,000,000. During the same
period, total exports multiplied from $70,000,000 to $1,315,000,000.
Giant mobile cranes, shown being assembled by workers at Haifa,
are increasing the harbor's capacity to handle the rising tide of
export goods.

Maurice Hindus' Epic Story of 'Two Worlds'

While his reflections on two
worlds, America and Russia, are
primary in this account, Maurice
Hindus also emerges here as auth-
or, lecturer and academician, and
his comments on university life
and of dissents must draw atten-
tion.
In an introduction, his nephew,
Milton Hindus, who is equally
prominent as an author, pays
honor to Maurice Hindus.

Life in the Russian Jewish com
munities before the last war, rem-
iniscences about Slutsk and the
personalities of an era now of a
nearly-forgotten past, impressions
of Jews and non-Jews, are given in
"A Traveler in Two Worlds" by
Maurice Hindus.
This work, posthumously pub-
lished by Doubleday, presents in-
teresting views, and non-Jews
emerge in a good light. For ex-
ample, commenting on his native
village, where he was steeped in
peasant lore and grew up a peasant
himself, he stated:
"I had never known of anti-
Semitism among our muzhiks. The
four Jewish families in the village
carried the common burden of
backwardness and poverty as stoic-
ally as did their non-Jewish neigh-
bors. Nor did I ever acquire the
anti-Christian bias of so many
Jews in towns and cities. Adam
Sharankovich, our priest, was a
remarkable man and he would no
more call Jews Thristkillers' than
Jews, even in the privacy of their
homes, would call him 'pogrom-
maker,' an epithet that fitted many
priests in the Pale of Settlement,
where Jews were confined under
the Czars. Mother always address-
ed the priest as batyushka (little
father) and whenever he stopped
at our house, she fired the samo-
var. She never took money from
him but he always brought her a
gift of one kind or another-fresh
fruit, honey, eggs . . ."

Why are the straps of the
Tefillin wrapped around the arm
seven times?
Some claim that these seven
turns represent the seven words
of the Hebrew verse in the Psalms
which reads "Thou Openest Thy
Hands and Satisfies Every Living
Thing." This demonstrates our
faith that the Almighty will satisfy
our needs. Another interpretation
claims that the seven turns refer
to the seven names given to the
"Evil Inclination" within us. In
this respect, the seven:-turns signi-
fy that we are binding and con-
trolling any of the seven phases
of the evil inclination within us.
Some contend that the seven turns
represent seven protective angels
who watch over us. Still others
maintain that the seven turns rep-
resent the seven nuptial benedic-
tions. This means that we are
united with the Almighty just as
the bride and bridegroom unite
with each other in love and in trust.
What is the Jewish view re-
garding adoption?
Adoption is, indeed, a very old
procedure. It appears that even in
the days of Abraham, there was
a custom among near Eastern
people to adopt an heir, if one was
childless. It is thus claimed that
Abraham somehow adopted his
servant to become his heir, before
he had sons. Generally speaking,
Jewish tradition looks with favor
and even admiration upon those
who raise children which are not
their own by natural birth. The.
Midrash even calls such a foster
parent the father of the child (Exo-
dus Rabbah 46). In one place,
Pharaoh's daughter, who rescued
