Stalin's Victim
Tells of Prison
Camps in USSR
Joseph Berger, believed to be
the highest-ranking political figure
to survive Stalin's prison camps,
describes his 22 years of incarcer-
ation and memorializes his fellow
victims in a new book, "Nothing
But the Truth," to be published by
John Day Co. Sept. 2.
Founder and former general
secretary of the Communist party
in Palestine, the author was put in
charge of the Near East depart-
ment of the Komintern in 1932.
Two years later, he was the victim
of a Stalin purge, and spent the
next 22 years in labor camps. He
was "outside society," a phrase
used by investigators to describe
the status of people who repre-
sented a danger to the little group
of people concentrated around
Stalin.
"Rehabilitated" in 1956, Joseph
Berger now lives and lectures in
Tel Aviv.
