Local Bnai Brith Council Launches Membership Drive to Honor Wexler The 25 Bnai Brith lodges of Metropolitan Detroit are engaged in a special membership campaign honoring the outgoing interna- tional president of Bnai Brith, Dr. William A. Wexler. Arthur C. Schott, chairman of this special membership campaign, said, "Few men have given of themselves to Bnai Brith and to world Jewry as has Bill Wexler. As president of Bnai Brith and president of the Conference of Na- tional Jewish Organizations, there is no one more deserving of tribute. This membership cam- paign is designed to pay the great- est possible tribute to his vision and his goals, by building a stronger and larger Bnai 'Brith, as a meaningful acknowledgement to Bill Wexler that his six years at the hub—in a turbulent period of unusual challenge to Jewish life—are a record of wise effort and much fulfillment." New members enrolled dur- ing this campaign, and their sponsors, will be inscribed on the honor scroll, which will be presented to Dr. Wexler at the * * * • . Bnai Brith Hillel Book Interprets the Holocaust "Night Words: a Midrash on the Holocaust," the response of a young North American Jew to the destruction of European Jewry, is the latest in a series of pro- grammatic resources published by the Bnai Brith Hillel Foundations. Written by David Cr; Roskies, a graduate student at Brandeis Uni- versity, and published under the editorship of Dr. Alfred Jospe, di- rector of program and resources for the Bnai Brith Hillel Founda- tions, "Night Words" draws upon a variety of Jewish and general sources in order to project inter- pretations of the Holocaust. Schumann, Israel Envoy Hold Paris Meeting - PARIS (JTA)—Israeli Ambassa- dor Asher Ben-Natan met with French Foreign Minister Maurice Schumann at the Quai D'Orsay for more than an hour last week. Informed sources said the major differences between the French and Israeli positions on the Mid- dle East were apparent as the two diplomats conferred, but that the possibility of a future meeting be- tween Schumann and Israeli For- eign Minister Abba Eban reported- ly was raised. Observers recalled in that con- nection that Schumann said dur- ing a recent foreign policy debate in the National Assembly that if Eban should visit Paris, he would be "delighted to meet him." LETTER BOX Editor, The Jewish News: Your article about Rabbi Kahane is contradictory. First you talk against him and then you ask if muscular Judaism is necessary. You answer that it is, that Jews who are attacked should defend themselves. How can they, without arms? You give an example of Jewish defense samo-okhrana — we called it samo-oborona. Yes, I was there. We formed self-de- fense groups all over the Ukraine, but we were of very little signifi- cance because we were armed with sticks, brooms, hammers, against guns and revolvers ... I do not agree with some of Kahane's tactics — bombing build- ings, beating up people, but I agree with him that Jews should be armed. REVA .SCHOICHIT Editor's Note: Mrs. Schoichit should account to herself: against whom are we to arm in a free land like ours? Against the police — for what reasons? Against the Russian embassy — you have al- ready rejected the idea of bombing buildings. Jews should defend themselves against attackers when there is no protection — as was the case in Russia, or against Arab terrorists when the British be- trayed their obligations to Jews in the Land of Israel. But here? Advocacy of revolvers for all Jews, as Kahane did? There was nothing more contemptible than that sug- gestion by a "rabbi" who has lost the right to be a Jewish spokes- man by his resort to unreason. A bill providing $1,000,000,000 in tax relief to the small business community has been introduced by Congressman William S. Broomfield (R.-Royal Oak). Broomfield's bill would shift the tax burden from smaller corpora- tions to big business, with no loss of revenue for the Federal govern- ment.
