THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 26-Friday, August 6, 1971 Kramer Tells of New Film Barbra to Play Bernhardt By HERBERT G. LUFT (Copyright 1971, JTA, Inc.) HOLLYWOOD-Stanley Kramer asked your JTA columnist to at- tend a prerelease screening of his latest picture. "Bless the Beats and the Children," before taking the print to Russia for a special Film Festival. This will be Kramer's third trip to the annual Soviet fete where espe- cially his anti-Nazi pictures have been highly welcomed. Kramer is planning a film ac- count of "The Trial of Lieutenant Calley," based on the book by John Sack (first serialized in Life Magazine) which in turn is a con- densation of 75 hours of pretrial tape recording made voluntarily by the defendant but not presented at the court martial. Kramer tells me that he is not editorializing but lets the record speak alone in strictly visual terms. To him, Calley became the scapegoat for the guilt of many. The massacre is a chemical reaction to war in general, says Kramer, adding "There but for the grace of God go I?," a philosophy we do not endorse believing that it was the duty of the individual to refuse obeying inhuman orders. * * * Barbra Streisand confirms that she will portray Sarah Bernhardt in a production of her own com- LIMO:VS Pin• Italian-American Cuisine Deliciously Prepared for the Discerning Teat• • BANQUET FACILITIES Now: Open Sunday 11 Noon UN 14451 7123 W. Mark Lester (of Oliver fame) appears as Hansel. Director Curtis Harrington says that the ending "is sadly ironical." * * Ernest Lehman completes loca- tion in New York City and in Dorset, Vt., on filmization of Philip, Roth's novel, "Portnoy's Complaint." Richard Benjamin stars as Alexander Portnoy, Karen Black as "The Monkey;" and Lee Grant and Jack Somack appear as Mr. and Mrs. Portnoy. Inte- riors will be photographed at War- ners in Burbank. * * * Mel Shavelson, producer-direc- tor of the Israel-made film, "Cast a Giant Shadow," and author of the subsequent book, "How to Write a Jewish Movie," now goes back into production with the non- controversial picture, "The War Between Men and Women" a con- temporary human comedy based on a group of James Thurber sketches, with Jack Lemmon in the lead. Barbara Mandrell at Fair NORTHWOOD INN ■ pany (First Artists) in conjunction with British writer-director Ken Russell (or "Women in Love" and "The Devils"). Miss Streisand had told us pre- viously (during a press interview some three years ago) that an- pearing on the screen as Sarah Bernhardt would be the crowning effort of her career, an achieve- ment she then thought would take ber almost a lifetime to accom- plish. Yet, she now that the ar- tistic and financial power to pro- duce herself and plans to put the picture before the cameras next spring with locations in both France and England, with a Na- tional General Release. Barbra currently is busy re- hearsing for Warner Bros. the comedy "What's Up, Doc?" co- starring with Ryan O'Neal of "Love Story" with whom she also has been linked romantically. Photog- raphy under director Peter Bog- danovich starts next month in San Francisco. Right afterwards, she contemplates to begin filming of "Up the Sandbox" for Chartoff- Winkler Productions. Paul Zindel, Pulitzer Prize winner for the stage play, "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds," is now writing the scenario tailor- made for Miss Streisand. Director Lee H. Katzin is nego- tiating with Barbra for her to play the lead in "Bent Jane," story of a compulsive killer who happens to be a woman. It is based on a book by W. D. Richter who also writes the screen play. Last, not least, Barbra Streisand is working towards the fulfillment of another pet project; this one a whimsical tale from the pen of Sholom AleiChem entitled, "Yenti, the Yeshiva Boy." Barbra will por- tray a young girl who poses as a boy in order to get into the ye- shiva and study to become a rabbi. She hopes to do this film in East- ern Europe next summer, after completion of the Sarah Bernhardt project. * * * li- Barbara Mandrell, one of the top female vocalists in country mu- sic, will perform in a Country Show of Stars at the 1971 Michigan State Fair Aug. 29, Fair Manager Danny Raskinci LISTENING MOVIE GUIDE ward Wks'.
