Jacob Meyer Mathis, a teacher and administrator in the United Hebrew Schools for more than 40 years, died Monday at age 67. Mr. Mathis, highly regarded as a Hebraist, combined his love for the language and literature with a skill in audio-visual techniques, which he pioneered within the com- munal school system. Jay Braverman, former princi- pal of the United Hebrew High School here and now educational director of the United Talmud Torahs in Mon- treal, said in his eulogy that Mr. Mathis repre- sented a vital link between gymnasium edu- cation in Europe Mr. Mathis and the a f ter- noon school system in the United States. After obtaining his Hebrew and secular high school education in a Tarbut school in Lithuania, Mr. Mathis went to Germany to com- plete a degree in chemical en- gineering. Returning to Lithu- ania, he taught chemistry, phys- ics, mathematics and nature in- the Hebrew language. In so do- ing he had to coin new words for the sciences - relying upon the Hebrew roots to maintain the purity of the language. In Detroit since 1928, Mr. Mathis first mastered English at Detroit City College and then devoted his time to the Hebrew schools - an association which he considered central to his life. With an insatiable curiosity of his own, Mr. Mathis was not con- tent to instruct by rote, instead devising projects for his students, taking them on trips and picnics, allowing the children to compose the narrative for film strips which they then directed- Academically disinterested students who could 50 BUSINESS CARDS not be reached in other ways re- JULIUS ROSS MOVING CO. sponded to Mr. Mathis' love of Local and Long Distance STORAGE. machines and would come at 8 Packing, pianos, appliances, household a.m. Sunday to "help" him set up furnishings, office furniture. the laboratory. 8829 Northend-Ferndale In September 1967, at age 63, Mr. 543 4832 Mathis entered Wayne State Uni- PAINTING, exterior, interior.
