THE WXYZ:TV PREVIEW pre-
sentation affair was a big $40,000
extravaganza blast . . . but the
part we enjoyed most was riding
on a DSR bus again from the
Pontchartrain to Grosse Pointe
War Memorial Bldg. goings-on and
back to the Ponch for more shin-
digging . . The chartered rides
brought back a lot of memories
. . . but none of being able to drink
champagne then . . . The WXYZ-
TV, ABC network hoop-de-doo was
fun, and also brought out guys
in a strange revelation . . . that
everybody's an advertising man
today . . . former copy writers,
artists, etc. are "telling" success-
ful businessmen what to do.
BACK IN 1927, Myron "Suzie"
Schechter met Rose Polasky at
a dance given by the Nighthawk
Club, of which he was a mem-
ber . .. What next? . . . Watch-
ing him play basketball, of course
("Suzie" was one of the greats
at the oid City College, now
Wayne State University) ... Love
grew as the immediate years
passed and finally wound up in
marriage . . . Cv,111 "Suzie" and
Rose now celebrating their beau-
tiful 40th anniversary.
BARBARA MILIS IS happy to
be home . . . She has been mar-
ried for less than two years and
her husband Alan has kept her on
the move since their marriage in
August, '69 . . . After a California
wedding they moved to Detroit,
then on to New York, Chicago, New
York, California and back to De-
troit . . . Now they have to stay
around for awhile- since her sisters,
Vicki and Eileen, are visiting, and
mom and dad, Lynne and Bernie
Becker, will be in town soon from
the West Coast.
EVERY SUMMER, IDA Av-
rushin goes with her grandchil-
dren, Bennett, Mindy .and Steven
Schwartz to South Haven . .. This
year, Bennett got a head start
. . . he's already there . . . as
desk clerk at Mendelson's!
FINALS -TOURNAMENT win-
ners in the popular three-wall
paddleball championship at the
Jewish Center are Morrie Wexler
and. Gerry Sallan, who won top
honor's by defeating Morrie Wollack
and Nathan Feldman . . . Usual
play is about 45 minutes, but it
took 1 1/2 hours for the new champs
to win‘- !:. . . With its three walls,
paddleta11 is considered a much
harder game than four-walled
squash.

OUR RECENT TOUR of the .
City of Hope Medical Center in
Duarte, Calif., was not without
humor . . . Dr. Mel Jacobs, head
of radiology, was explaining and
showing plaster sections of a
human body . . • how they take
a "slice"-when a voice came
from the back, "Do you mean,
doctor, that you cut the body
in half?" (Dr. Jacobs explained
that he was no magician and
meant an X-ray slice to deter-
_ mine the extent of a tumor.)
. . . Another was the doctor tell-
ing of being at the City of Hope
only 10 days and a lady dele-
gate, after listening to him
speak, remarking, "In so short
a time you learned so much al-
ready!"

vironment of the Slovakian coun-
tryside, before he was picked up
by the Nazis and the Fascist
guards of the Hlinka collaborators.
He spent five years in a German
slave labor camp while his par-
ents were deported to the extermi-
nation centers of Auschwitz for
their crime of being Jewish. It
was a daring step for Kadar and
his co-director Elmer Klos (also
collaborator of "Adrift") to select
"The Shop on Main Street" (from
the novel by Ladislav Grossman)
as subject of a movie to be made
in Slovakia (a Catholic country
with a tradition of anti-Semitism),
because the environment was too
close to his own, the wounds suf-
fered too fresh, and the indictment
for mass crimes encompassing not
only the Nazis but also their
stooges whose kinfolk still abound
in the villages.

MGM PRESENTS A WONDERFUL MOTION PICTURE
Kadar goes from one Angel Levine
FOR YOUR FAMILY'S ENTERTAINMENT
to another. The film director who
today looks six years younger, not
six years older, than he did early
in 1966 when I introduced him to
the Foreign Press Corps in Holly-
wood, now is smartly dressed, sun-
burned, wears his hair longer and
looks much happier and more at
ease. However, he complains that
it is much harder to set up a
motion picture production here
independently than it is 'anywhere
in Europe. We know it is tough to
raise money for a film in Holly-
wood and New York, and the red
tape is almost unsurmountable and
time-consuming. As Kadar right-
fully observes, the creative film
maker is already worn out with
pre-production problems before he
can commence principal photog-
raphy. On the other hand, Kadar
praises the high skill of American
casts and crews and the dedica-
tion to their jobs shown by all, an
element by far outweighing the
slow process of getting started.
Kadar wants the readers of the
Jewish Telegraph Agency news to
know that he feels badly about
the Yiddish Theater in the country.
