Retarded Children Win Essay Prizes

A. L. Baldock, president of the J. T. Baker Chemical Co., a
subdivision of Richardson-Merrell, Cincinnati-based pharmaceutical
complex, signs an agreement with Mrs. Max Schenk, president of
Hadassah, for the rights to a cancer diagnostic test developed by
Dr. Chloe Tal (standing), immunologist at the Hadassah-Hebrew
University Medical Center, in Ein Karem, Jerusalem. The test shows
promise for the early detection of cancer.

Seminar on Prevention of Blindness
to Be Convened by Israel Academy

NEW YORK—Two Hebrew day
school students—both members of
a special class for retarded chil-
dren administered by the Hillel
Hebrew Academy of Beverly Hills,
Calif., won honorable mention in
an international essay contest on
honoring parents sponsored by
"Olomeinu - Our World" - a chil-
dren's magazine published by
Torah Umesorah - the National
Society for Hebrew Day Schools.
According to Rabbi Yaakov
Fruchter who is managing editor
of the children's magazine, the
fact that the two honorable men-
tion winners were in a special
class for the retarded was entirely
unknown at the time the essays
were judged.
Rabbi Fruchter, who is also
director of the publications de-
partment of Torah Umesorah,
said that entries in the contest
came in from many English
speaking countries including
Australia, Canada and the Pana-
ma Canal Zone. A first prize
winner was Ruby Nissenbaum,
10, a student at a school in the
Panama Canal Zone.
Miriam, one of the retarded
children who competed with some
of the best of the Hebrew day

school movement in North America,

wrote as follows: "I think I should
honor my parents because I love

them. And I want them to know
this while I have them. They are
the only parents I have."
Irving, the other student in the
special retarded class, wrote: "I
love my parents and they love me.
When I broke my glasses last
week, they did not get angry, they
just had them fixed for me. They
understand it was not my fault".
