Weisman, president of the Zion- ist Organization of America, said recently that he still objects to measures intended to open Amer- ica's doors to large-scale immi- gration by Soviet Jews and claimed that critics of his position "misunderstand it." Weisman was commenting on the sharp criticism leveled against his stand by two Orthodox lead- ers, Rabbi Bernard A. Poupko, president of the Religious Zionists of America and Rabbi Abraham Gross, president of the Rabbinical Alliance. Both rabbis, in separate state- ments, denounced Weisman's July 15 statement urging Con- gress to drop proposed legisla- tion for 30,000 emergency visas for Soviet Jews on grounds that it "can only divert attention from their primary demand to be permitted to go to Israel." Rabbi Gross called Weisman's statement "irresponsible" and "un- represeritative of Jewish opinion." Rabbi Poupko called on Ortho- dox and Zionist organizations to rectify "the harmful effects of the Weisman statement" by informing congressmen of their affirmation of the proposed legislation. A spokesman at the office of Rep. Edward Koch (D., N.Y.), sponsor of the legislation in the House, told the JTA that the bill, now in the Judiciary Committee, would give Soviet Jews "another option" for permanent residence. He said "there is nothing com- pulsory in this bill. If Jews in the Soviet Union can get out only by coming here, there should be visas for them." Charles S. Zimmerman, presi- dent of the Jewish Labor Com- mittee, reaffirmed his own or- ganization's support of the Koch bill. He expressed "amazement" at Weisman's stand. Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Gerald Ford (R., Mich.) became the 118th co-sponsor of the Koch bill. There are 34 sena- tors behind the Case-Javits bill. Sen. Gordon L. Allott, of Col- orado, chairman of the Republican Senate Policy Committee, became the 19th senator to support a reso- lution calling on the Soviet gov- ernment to permit Jews to emi- grate from the USSR. The resolution, introduced by Sen. William E. Brock .(R., Term.), also asks the State Department to protest in the United Nations against Soviet transgression of the Declaration of Human Rights.
