al Keren Kayemeth committees
be co-opted as members of the na-
tional Zionist Federation Commit-
tees.
The council offered its full sup-
port for the implementation of the
fund's plans for the next five
years, which call for a substantial
financial investment.
A resolution stated that the
"Zionist General Council sees a
vital need for the extension of
the ranks of Fund volunteers
and financial resources and the
strengthening of Keren Kaye-
meth's position as an institution
which embodies Zionist ideology,
fulfills important educational
tasks and strives to work
throughout the year in every
Jewish home.
Jacob Tsur, chairman of the
Keren Kayemeth board of direc-
tors, informed council members
that since the Six-Day War the
fund has reclaimed approximately
100,000 dunams (25,000 acres) for
27 new settlements.
Tsur presented the JNF budget
for the 1971-72 year which comes
to $20,000,000 and stressed the
need for substantially increasing
contributions to the Keren Kaye-
meth. During the past year, net
proceeds from all forms of dona-
tions in the 48 countries where the
JNF functions totaled just over
$10,000,000.
Later, speaking at a joint meet-
ing of the leadership of the Israel
Labor Party and Mapam Party,
Prime Minister Golda Meir em-
phatically opposed a recent pro-
posal that the government and the
Keren Kayemeth sell the land of
housing projects to flat owners in
buildings containing more than one
story. "Certainly not," she con-
cluded. "I am in no way prepared
to endorse such a sale or to con-
done the selling out of our sacred
national principles - as though they
were old clothes."

Zealots Continue
to Stone Buses
Despite Agreement

JERUSALEM (JTA)—Religious
zealots are continuing their cam-
paign against the Egged bus co-
operative despite the latter's prom-
ise not to operate buses in Jerusa-
lem before the close of the Sab-
bath.
A
woman bus passenger holding
a baby was injured Saturday night
when a bus was pelted with stones
in the ultra-Orthodox Mea Shear-
im quarter. The incident occurred
a half hour after the Sabbath end-
ed and normal traffic had been
resumed through the quarter with-
out incident.
Later in the evening, local res-
idents blocked traffic through the
quarter by spreading rocks and
garbage on the streets. Police
were summoned several times to
remove the obstructions.
A spokesman for the extremist
Neturei Karta said that Orthodox
circles in Mea Shearim were in-
vestigating the feasibility of estab-
lishing their own bus line to carry
residents of the quarter to and
from the Mahane Yehuda market
and other points in the city.
An Egged spokesman said
Sunday night that the company's
agreement not to operate buses
on the Sabbath stands despite
the latest stone-throwing inci-
dent. "We don't understand
what they want from us any
more. We made an agreement
and we stood by our obligation.
We expect the police to find a
way to stop our buses from be-
ing attacked," he said.
The spokesman was referring
to an agreement reached last
Thursday at a meeting of Egged
representatives with Rabbis Men-
achem Porush, Shearyashuv Co-
hen and Yaacov Katznelson who
pledged that there would be no
more violence against the buses if
Egged agreed not to operate dur-
ing the Sabbath hours.
But the stone-throwing Saturday
night indicated that the rabbis'
word carried no weight with the
Orthodox extremists.
In a related incident Friday
night, a youth walking through the
quarter with a lighted cigarette
was assaulted by a group of zeal-
ots. He reportedly drew a knife
and wounded several of his assail-
ants. No complaint was lodged
with the police.
On Friday, a Jerusalem juvenile
court imposed a $175 fine on two
youths, age 15-16, for attacking re-
ligious youths during a demonstra-
tion. Another youngster was given
a six-month suspended sentence
for setting his dog on religious
youths demonstrating against the
Egged bus company.
