According to Milton A. Seymour,
chairman of the ADL's New York
board, the community superintend-
ent of School District 9, upon the
request of the community school
board, sent a listing of 247
teachers, requested by principals
to be appointed to their schools
this fall, to the presidents of par-
ent associations in the district.
The list, which described the
teachers only by name, racial or
ethnic background and current
school, was accompanied by a
memorandum asking the parents
to notify the principal and parents
association president "of any
teacher who has not performed
satisfactorily .. so that they are
not deluded into requesting a
teacher who has been less than
satisfactory elsewhere."
Seymour said that describing
teachers by ethnic and racial back-

`Jewish Contributions
to U. S. Not Well Known
STAMFORD, Conn., (JTA) —
What many Jews did for the
United States should be better
known. That was the burden of a
talk given by Stephen Birming-
ham, the author, at a Sabbath eve
symposium at Temple Sinai here.
In doing research for his books,
"Our Crowd" and "The Gran-
dees," Birmingham said he
discovered that many important
contributions by Jews to the de-
velopment of this nation are un-
known to most Americans.
Flogging in the Navy was abol-
ished because of the efforts of
Commodore Uriah Levy, a Jew
who served this country in the War
of 1812.
It was Levy Who was responsible
for the preservation of Thomas
Jefferson's home in Virginia, a fact
that was 'not even known to the
guigps in Monticelo, according to
Birmingham.

For a Change,
Sec. Rogers Tells
Some Good News
Matters of diplomacy came to a
halt at a recent high-level meeting
in Washington, when Secretary of
State William Rogers made an
important announcement:
Moshe Raviv, counselor in the
Israel Embassy, was informed he
had become the father of a 9-
pound, 11-ounce baby boy.
The incident was relayed to The
Jewish News by Detroiter Janet
Sucher, whose husband Harold is
Raviv's second cousin.
As Mrs. Sucher tells it, the hos-
pital where Hannah Raviv had
given birth notified Raviv's secre-
tary, who in turn called Secretary
Rogers' secretary.
The latter was asked to relay the
message to Raviv after the one-
hour meeting, at which the topic of
discussion was the controversial
memo by Donald C. Bergus, chief
American diplomat in Cairo. Also
in attendance was Joseph Sisco,
assistant secretary of state for
Near Eastern affairs.
Rogers' secretary decided not
to wait until after the meeting. -
She relayed the message imme-
diately to Rogers, and he inter-
rupted the proceedings to an-
nounce the glad tidings and
extend his own congratulations.
tions.
The Suchers, of Lucerne Ave.,
Southfield, and other cousins
Ernest and Edith Schwartz of Na-
dine Ave., Huntington Woods, were
in Washington for the July 6 bris.
Rabbi Stanley Rabinowitz of Adas
Israel Congregation officiated, and
the 200 guests included congress-
men, embassy and State Erepart-
ment staff, journalists and other
Washington dignitaries.
Mrs. Sucher and Israel Ambas-
sador Itzhak Rabin are godparents
to the baby, named Yuval (Hebrew
for creek) Israel. The Ravivs have
two other children.
Prior to his present post, Raviv
was private secretary to Abba
Eban, Israel's minister of foregin
affairs. He has held the Washing-
ton post for three years.
