ORT Applauds the J VS Workshop
One group paid tribute to an-
other recently, when the Michigan
Region of Women's American
ORT, at its annual Honor Roll
Luncheon, honored the Community
Workshop of Detroit with ORTs
annual community service award.
Mrs. Bernard W. Colton, imme-
diate past region president, pre-
sented the Jewish Vocational Serv-
ice and its Community Workshop
with a plaque for outstanding com-
munity service.
Mrs. Lawrence S. Hack, Mich-
igan Region vice president of
Honor Roll, was chairman of the
day.
Each year, Women's American
ORT recognizes an individual or
organization whose work most
closely parallels that of ORT in
the field of education, with a spe-
cial emphasis on trade and/or
vocational training.
The workshop, an agency of the
Jewish Welfare Federation, serv-
ices individuals age 16 and over

who have emotional problems and
personality disorders or who are
culturally deprived.
The object of the workshop is
to provide orientation into a tradi-
tional workshop atmosphere and to
help each individual, through
training, to reach his optimum
level of employability.
Medical, psychiatric and/or case-
work services are offered concur-
rently with the workshop training,
after which the individual con-
sidered employable is referred to
the job placement specialist on
staff. The placement counselor
makes special arrangements such
as on-the-job training and also
takes responsibility for a 90 day
follow-up.
Approximately 300-400 previous-
ly considered "unemployable" peo-
ple are trained each year to per-
form tasks, work with others, cope
with a shop atmosphere, and many
are placed in situations of suitable
employment.
At a recent installation luncheon,
Mrs. Donald Thal was installed as
president of the
Michigan Region.
Mrs. Thal, who
is a graduate of
Queen's College
with a BA in
Spanish, received
her MA in educa-
tion at Colum-
b i a University.
The Thals have
three children.
Mrs. Thal
Mrs. Bertram
Adler was installed as chairman
of the executive committee. Vice
presidents are: Mesdames Ber-
nard W. Colton, Lawrence Hack,
Martin Zeldes, Hyman Jackson,

Lady MD Forgets
Labor Pains; Saves
Young Man's Life
Here's another one for those who
think woman's place is in the
home.
Dr. Sharon Wolf, 27, a second-
year resident at Sinai Hospital, re-
ported in at about 1 p.m. Saturday
to have a baby. On arrival, how-
ever, orderlies brought in a young
man who had suffered a drug over-
dose and had stopped breathing.
Forgetting the labor pains, Dr.
Wolf, a graduate of Wayne State
University Medical School, helped
administer resuscitation to the man
until other doctors could arrive.
With the help of nurses, she had
the young man breathing normally
within minutes.
When the other doctors arrived,
Dr. Wolf went back to her labor
pains. They were only the first
stages, however, and she was sent
home to wait.
At 6 p.m., she returned to Sinai
and 3 1/2 hours later had a 61/2
pound boy.
