In the early. days of Tel Aviv,
when the city was being built street
by street northward from Jaffa, the
seaside promenade was the social
center of the city. In time the cen-
ter moved inland and the promen-
ade fell into disuse.
The revitalization began in the
late 1950s when hotels such as
The Hilton and Sheraton were
built here and when important
new buildings such as the Amer-
ican Embassy served to revital-
ize the decaying area.
The resurrection of the Tel Aviv
shore as a vital part of the city's
life is sparked by the burgeoning
tourism that Israel has been en-
joying. Over 500,000 visitors are
expected in Israel this year.
The development of the coast is
planned in three belts. The outer
ring will consist of anchorage
basins for large and small boats
and yachts. It will also include
floats and areas for marine sports.
The second belt is the seashore
itself. This is being expanded by
the construction of "1' shaped
landfills that jut out into the sea.
By forming protected coves for

Sodomy a Theme
in Rickler Novel

Publishers often hail a book as
great simply because it has a
contemporary appeal and resorts
to all sorts of sex manipulations.
In . "St. Urbain's Horseman,"
(Knopf), Mordecai Richler intro-
duces a court case dealing with
sodomy. The descriptive fashion
of the immoral act appalls. Many
a reader will undoubtedly ask
whether recalling Nazi guilt and
the German relationship of the girl
involved calls for such emphasis
on the sodomite.
.Richler, who will be remembered
as the author of "The Apprentice-
ship of Duddy Kravitz," deals in
his new volume with a rich Jew-
ish film director and the char-
acters on the all-Jewish St. Urbain
Street in Montreal. It is a mixed-
up family story and the man on
trial is hardly a likable character.
This Knopf-published novel has
an aspect of Nazi-hunting, the
author having introduced a search
for Mengele in his plot.

crease the amount of beach avail-
able.
Israel has a law that ensures
that all beaches remain in the
public domain, and because of this
the beach area will be kept open to
all of Tel Aviv's citizens.
The third belt is to consist of
commercial developments, hotels
and a six-lane highway.
Although the government is pro-
viding the seed money for the proj-
ect by building the infra-structure,
the bulk of the investment will be
coming from private sources in
Israel and abroad.
