Friend Recalls

LONDON—At a reception to
mark the sale of 1,000,000 paper-
back copies of "The Diary of
Anne Frank," Mrs. Eva Schloss,
of Edgware, England, reminisced
about her friend, Anne Frank.
Mrs. Schloss recalls that Anne

INDIANAPOLIS (JTA) — Sen.

most of her 12-year-old friends.
She was described as "Cheeky."
The last time they saw each
other was in May 1942, when Mrs.
Schloss' family went into hiding
after the Nazi occupation of Hol-
land.
In 1952, Mrs. Schloss' mother
married Anne's father. They had

Mordechai Piron
Chief Chaplain

TEL AVIV — The new chief
chaplain of the Israel Defense
Forces is Rabbi Mordechai Piron,
for many years the d e put y to
Chief Army Chaplain Shlomo
Goren. Rabbi Goren has retired
after 231/2 years in the army to
become chief rabbi of Tel Aviv-
Jaffa and president of its rabbinic-
al courts.
Rabbi Piron is being promoted
from the rank of colonel to that of
brigadier. Rabbi Goren holds the
rank of major general and is con-
sidered a leading contender for
the post of chief rabbi of Israel.
The new chief chaplain, born in
Vienna, came to Palestine in 1938.
He was ordained at the Yeshiva of
the Rabbi Kook Center in Jeru-
salem. He also studied at Hebrew
University and is a graduate in
humanities from the University of
London. During the War of Inde-
pendence, Rabbi Piron like his pre-
decessor, was in the Hagana fight-
ing in Jerusalem.

Lebanese Paper Reports
Excellent Conditions
Under Israeli Occupiers

TUNIS (ZINS) — An unusually
candid appraisal of the so-called
Israeli "occupation" of Arab lands
appeared in the Lebanese paper
"Al H‘vadat," in its issue of April
23.
The article states that Arab of-
ficials in the admistered areas now
enjoy excellent conditions, far sur-
passing their wildest dreams. These
officials, according to the paper,
may say otherwise but are abso-
lutely not interested in any change
and inwardly desire very much
to remain under Israel's rule.
Businessmen feel the same way.
(Israel helps them export their
products for which they now get
better prices than ever) as do
workingmen, for whom political
considerations are not the first
concern.

This summer, THE DETROIT
FOLKDANCE CLUB will meet as
part of the programing of Metro-
politan Beach. Simple dances are
taught, and more difficult dances
are demonstrated by leader Ben
Chang. Meeting on the boardwalk,
the group will gather July 11 and
25, Aug. 8 and 29 and Sept. 5.
Time is 6-8:30 p.m.

African Nation's Sugar
to Be Imported to Israel

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Israel has
reached an agreement to import
two-thirds of its annual sugar con-
sumption from an un-named East
African country through the port
of Eilat.
The imports, amounting to about
80,000 tons a year, will increase
the operation of Eilat's port by
25 per cent. The first sugar con-
signments are expected to arrive
in August.
Eilat, on the Gulf of Aqaba, is
the only Israeli port with direct
access to the Red Sea. Hitherto
it has functioned mainly as an ex-
port center.
Trucks bringing outgoing cargo
usually returned northwards em-
pty. Beginning in August they will
be carrying sugar.

The remark was interpreted as
a warning to the United States
not to pressure Israel to make too
many concessions to the Arabs

Michigan Region has sponsored
MDA's new first aid station at
Ashdod and is currently joining
the nationwide effort to supply

for Israel's blood services. Saxe
said, "In a relatively short
period, the Michigan Region has
become a major factor in our
efforts to upgrade the emer -

Giant strides have been made
under the splendid leadership
provided by Dr. Mames." For

NEW YORK (JTA)—The Israeli
Chief Rabbinate has sent an ap-
peal to Jews all over the world
to avoid abortions because they
are "contrary to Jewish religious
law." A letter signed by Rabbi
Akiva Gottlieb, chief secretary of
the rabbinate in Jerusalem, was
presented to a meeting sponsored
by the Long Island Right to Life
Committee, a group comprised of
Catholics, Protestants and Jews
opposed to legalizing abortions.
The letter reported on a con-
ference on the problem of abor-
tions sponsored by the Israeli
Chief Rabbinate at which abortions
were denounced as "the taking of
human life" and "a threat to na-
tional security." The letter claim-
ed that "while there is a struggle
to bring immigrants from other
countries to Israel, there is a
reckless attempt to reduce the
population internally."
