Eli Cohen's Dramatic Espionage Role Related in New Book

Now the story is related in a
large, 450-page book that gives
every detail of Cohen's experi-
ences and provides a total rec-
ord of what had' transpired dur-
ing his shrewd activities as well
as the related events in Israel.
Zwy Aldouby and Jerrold Bal-
linger provide this account in
"The Shattered Silence"—The
Eli Cohen Affair" published by
Coward, McCann and Geoghegan.
This remarkable story of one
man's genius in posing as a Mos-
lem would have been judged as
a fairy tale were it not that it is
a current occurrence—it ended in
11965 with Cohen's arrest—and
were it not that Aldouby and
Ballinger have documented it so
fully and have preserved the de-
tails as an historical record that
is unmatched in espionage.
A simple man who had gained
knowledge of Arab intentions to
destroy Israel, Cohen gained his
fir s t knowledge of the serious
Israel-Arab rift in Egypt. A po-
grom in the haret — the Jewish
quarter — of Alexandria intro-
duced the man who was to become
the secret agent of Israel, to the
realities of Middle East hatreds
and the Israel's struggle for life.
Eliahu ben Shaul Cohen, the
Israeli spy's full name, posed as
Kamal Amin Taabet and played
a role of a rich Arab when he be-
gan his activities in Damascus. He
became the intimate 'of generals,
cabinet officers, Syria's president.
The Baath party was about to
name him deputy defense minister

that was inevitable because of a
single incident of which he was
unaware after having shared all
the government secrets as a result
of his skillful entrance into the
closest government circles.
Because he was able to spend
freely, provide women for parties,
means of displaying affluence, en-
tertaining lavishly, making gener-
ous gifts—all means of ingratiat-
ing himself with the authorities.
He became a factor in the ruling
hierarchy, was able to get secret
information, to take photographs
of military areas and encamp-
ments.
The information he provided
later enabled Israel to wipe out
the Syrian fortifications in the
Golan Heights and the task
against Syria was made easier
as a result of the details secured
by Eli Cohen.
Skillfully, tactfully, Eli Cohen
labored in Israel's behalf. He mi-
crofilmed charts which showed
the extent of Russian and Chinese
aid to Syria. He was able to pass
on to the Israeli authorities the
information that Syria did not have
pilots sufficiently trained to with-
stand Israel's attacks.
Cohen's Damascus apartment
became a "love nest" for high
ranking Syrian officials, and by
becoming their. confidant he was
able to get the facts he needed to
pass on to Israeli authorities.
There was an Arab water plan
to divert the Jordan River and
thereby to harm Israel, and Cohen
acquire.' the information Israel
needed to avert such a danger.
El Fatah and related groups
suffered because of information
Cohen passed on about the ter-
rorist groups.
Daily, at 8 a.m., Cohen passed
on his information to Israel and
when the Syrians tried to force
him to radio faked information,
after he had been arrested, the
trick was quickly detected in Tel
Aviv. If it had not been for Syria's
order to test sophisticated elec-
tronic equipment from Russia,
ordering an interruption in radio
transmissions—a mere detail at the
time that Cohen was unaware of—
he might never have been caught.
His arrest shocked Israel. There
was a movement to save him from
the gallows. But a crowd of 10,000
was gathered for the public spec-
tacle and his wife suffered the
agonies of seeing it on teletision.
When Cohen's trial was con-
ducted there were appeals for
clemency from many quarters,
including the Detroit Council of
Churches and the pro-Israel
Lebanese Maronite elements
here. Pope Paul VI, Charles
de Gaulle, many European
statesmen pleaded in his behalf.
But the effort, ,. failed. Cohen,
after having been brutally
treated, was hanged publicly, in
the Damascus square.

NEW YORK (JTA)—The Asso-
ciation of Orthodox Jewish Teach-
ers in New York Public Schools
has decided to accept for associate
membership any Orthodox teacher
in any public or non-public school
in all parts of the United States,
its president reported.
The decision, effective as of next
September, will give such members
the privileges of full members ex-
cept for the right to vote. He said
some 25 to 30 such teachers had
applied for associate membership,
from schools in Massachusetts,
Indiana and California as well as
from schools in New York State.

USSR, Arabs Spend Billions
on 'Anti Israel Propaganda
NEW YORK — Zwy Aldouby
disclosed at a press conference
that military efforts in the Middle
East have switched to cold war
tactics, and intelligence operations
have increased to unheard of pro-
portions in the wake of the Six-
Day War. Arab and Soviet intelli-
gence services are now spending
more than a billion dollars on
intelligence efforts, and 1,500 of
the 6,000 Russian advisors in
Egypt are intelligence experts.
This information, uncovered by a
team 'of international newspaper-
men while conducting research for
Aldouby's "The Shattering Silence:
The Eli Cohen Affair" (Coward,
McCann & Geoghegan), was not
included in the book as it was
not directly related to the subject.
Aldouby revealed that the Soviet
Union has established espionage
training schools in Egypt, Syria
and Iraq, and has also absorbed
military intelligence personnel in
their own schools in Eastern
satellite countries. With five Arab

-

nations — Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Jor-
dan and Lebanon — and Israel,
Russia and China, the United
States and other Western countries
involved in this heightened intelli-
gence effort, the Middle East has
become the focus of struggles
between major powers who are
using the area to fight their own
intelligence wars.
Chinese influence in She Middle
East has reached a new high, par-
ticularly in Syria, w h e r e the
Chinese are training, equipping,
and advising terrorist organization
for anti-Israel and anti-Western
activities, Aldouby said. Because
the chief of Syria's general staff,
Mustafa Tlas, is pro-Maoist, the
Chinese are maintaining a strong
influence o v e r the espionage
schools near Damascus, as well
as absorbing a great number of
military intelligence personnel in
their schools in Peking.
