NYU Freshman Eyes Israeli Olympic Team

NEW YORK -Dov Djerassi, a
5'9" 235-pound freshman at New
York University, was born 18
years ago in Haifa. His family
moved to Brooklyn in 1963, but
Dov never has forgotten his child-
hood dream of competing for the
Israeli Olympic team. His goal is
1972.
Djerassi just started to throw the
hammer this year, has already

reached 176'8" and hopes to be
around the 190-foot mark by the
end of the summer. He's only a
few feet away from the Israeli
record-196'8", held by the veteran
performer Meyer Jacoby.
Zvi Janover, a former Israeli
Olympic track star in the decath-
lon and pole vault, said he feels
"a boy like Dov could close in on
200 feet in a very short time.
"Dov has the quickness of feet
that makes for a great hammer
thrower. When you add that to
his great body strength and his
eagerness to learn, his future only
can be bright."
Only one problem: Djerassi is
still an Israeli citizen, but he's
been away from the country for
a long period. It's up to the Israeli
Olympic Committee to decide
whether he is still eligible to com-
pete.

of devoted children, mix well with
more than a dozen assorted grand-
children, add some close relatives
and sprinkle with close friends . . .
put them all together in a beauti-
ful setting called Shenandoah . . .
have them all shout SURPRISE!
. . . and you will see the beaming
faces of Harry and Jenny Gold-
berg. What was the fuss all about?
. it was about 46 years of wedded
bliss. Harry and Jenny . . . many,
many more happy returns.
THE WEEKLY poker club has
been going on for so many years
at Aunt Jennie's home in Detroit,
that even her son Aubrey has for-
gotten when it all started. Jenny
Caplan, 81 years young, and her
"girl" friends, Lena Trepel, Esther
Wilson, Fanny Zeron and Rose
Schultzman, who are all in their
late 70s and early 80s, will never
miss a game if they can help it.
Makes it even nicer when Bill
Caplan's spouse Evelyn . . . pre-
pares the lunch and does the dishes
. . . Aunt Jenny . . . may you
continue to play until you're over
100.
SARAH FISHKIND will finally
get to see her beloved City of Hope
Medical Center Vilien she leaves
next week to attend the national
convention in Duarte. Calif. Sarah
has the singular distinction of be-
ing a charter member of the Mr.
and Mrs. Auxiliary which she will
represent along with Jules and
Ruth Olen . . . Incidentally, this
will mark the fourth convention
attendance for Charlie and Iva
Hoptman. Charlie is the outgoing
president.
YOU COULD split your sides
laughing at the childhood remi-
niscences of Fred and Bob Fein-
berg . . . especially the time
when Freddie got under Bob's
bed in the middle of the night
and wailed and wailed as a ghost.
You couldn't get Bob to close
his eyes for many nights after.
Incidentally, the major baseball
leagues lost a brilliant player
when Fred decided on an ac-
countant's career.
RECENT SCORE of haberdash-
er Sam Tannenhouse's Harvard
Shop-sponsored baseball team was
17 runs, 22 hits, 4 errors and 3
players left in the hospital.

gate an alleged football scandal, it
was disclosed following a recent
cabinet meeting.
The cabinet voted unanimously
to have Supreme Court President
Shimon Agranat appoint a three-
man inquiry commission to carry
out the probe under the provisions
of a 1968 law.
The commission will investigate
"rumors" that soccer players and
teams were accepting bribes to fix
games in order to influence team
standings in the leagues and the
results of football pools.
The cabinet decided that the
rumors were "a matter of vital
public interest" that had to be in-
vestigated.

Herschel Bernardi, known to television aficionados as "Arnie" (shown here), is associated in
his portrayals with the simple folk. Bernardi, the son of actors, grew up with the theater. At 6 months,
he appeared on stage in the arms of his mother, Laina, playing the role of a "carry-on." He describes
his childhood as happy, with his parents providing a healthy respect for culture. Bernardi toured for
years in a one-man show based on the folk tales of Sholem Aleichem, then went to Broadway in "Fid-
dler on the Roof." This coming season, CBS switches "Arnie" to Monday nights.
