Wit and Widsom
of Hollywood
Atheneum Work

YOUR HOST NtCK 4110i MASTERS

If Judith ,Crist likes it, it must
have much merit—so say those who
are guided by the movie and thea-
ter critic. And Judy does like the
collection of humor that Atheneum
has published under the title "The
Wit and Wisdom of Hollywood."
Max Wilk did the collecting and
editing and his compilation is a
330-page book that is packed with
stories, anecdotes, recollections
about the lives of Hollywood stars.

IN LUVO'NIA

There are the love scenes and
the reflections of many personal
incidents. There are genuine jokes
and numerous chestnuts that
won't be too -acceptable.
The author has utilized the five
pages of nonsense by Jay Living-
stone and Ray Evans entitled "The
Rabbi and the Nun." If it weren't
nonsense it would be insulting,
But there are many good pieces
to make up for this sort of trash.
There are some good quips from
George Jessel and others.

Max Wilk is clever to have
titled one portion of his book
"Scribes and Pharisees."

Sometimes a pun is two lines in
length but Wilk also has.'intro-
duced stories that are many' pages
long.
Judy Crst'(s introduction has
these good words to say about
Wilk's book:
"Admittedly 'there's nothing
funny about the movie business in
the Seventies—unless you get your
guffaws out of box-office grosses
and international banking. And all
the other decades may have
seemed as grim in contemporary
terms. But there were giants—and
fortunately the right man's on
hand to anthologize them. What
qualifies Max Wilk for the job is
not that he's one of the rare 'word-
men' in the medium today or that
he has chosen dove-grey rather
than black comedy as his metier
(a pretty gutsy choice these dark
days) or even that he's the author
of the one funny Jerry Lewis
movie I've seen. It's simply that
he's a movie-lover—and nothing
about movies is alien to him. And
like the giants, he laughs best
when it hurts a little."
Whether it is Zanuck or Perel-
man or Cohn or Thalberg or the
scores of others on the Hollywood
scene who are utilized for remini-
scenes about the film industry, the
personalities drawn into the Wilk
picture make "The Wit and Wis-
dom of Hollywood" a recommend-
able book. It is no wonder that
it is offered as a "Special Alter-
nate" by the Book of the Month
Club.
