Memory

By LUCIENNE Y. LEVIN

Editnr's Note: Mrs. D. B. (Luci-
enne Y.) Levin has written a num-
ber of stories about life in the
concentration camps and they were
published in the French journal
"Revue Juive de Belgique" in 1945.
She also has translated the main
theme of her stories in free verse
and has prepared this poetic piece
based on her reminiscences.

In a big, deserted,
Somber and gray room,
One little shoe
On one little bed
Still retains the shape
Of a fleshy foot
That it used to mold.
One little shoe
That was put on
By loving hands
That caressed it
And laced it.
And made sure it held
A cherished foot.
One little shoe
Now shriveled and cold,
That will never again
Feel the rushing of blood,
Never again support
The running of feet,
Never feel warm
And supple and shiny,
Never be alive
With the life of the child.
One little shoe
That will soon be discarded,
But not before,
With tears 'in their eyes
And rage in their hearts,
The new inmates who have come,
Swear to themselves
That somehow, somewhere, some-
time,
Thousands of little feet
In thousands of little shoes
Will replace this one
That will never again be.
