Racial Justice Urged
on Anniversary of Deaths
of 3 Civil Rights Workers

Editor, The Jewish News
I am writing this on the eve of
the anniversary of the lynching of
three civil rights workers in Phila-
dephia, Miss., in 1964 — Andrew
Goodman, Mickey Schwermer and
James Chaney.
Both the first two named young
men were Jews. They gave their
lives for racial justice for a racial
group not their own.
Anti-Semitism is always morally
wrong and it is particularly stupid
for Negroes to be anti-Semitic, as
some among the Black Muslims
and Black Panthers appear to be.
The Jews know from nearly 2,000
years of bitter persecution what
racial discrimination means.
Jews were among the founders
of the NAACP and a Jew, Kivie
Kaplan, is one of the two officers
of the NAACP, and a very effec-
tive one, too.
Doubtless there are bad Jews.
There are bad Negroes, too. A bad
Negro assassinated Malcolm X. It
is just as foolish and evil for
Negroes to be anti-Semitic, opposed
to all Jews, because a few Jews
may be bad, as it is for white
bigots to demand segregation and
oppose civil rights because there
are a few bad Negroes.

Veteran Says Jews
Not Afraid to Speak Up
Against Vietnam War

Editor, The Jewish News:
In The Jewish News dated June
18, there appeared an article,
"Jews Urged to Speak Out Against
the Vietnam War."
Mrs. Thea Braiterman, repre-
senting the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations, seems to be
of the opinion that Jews do not
speak out against the Vietnam War
for fear that support for Israel
from the United States would
diminish.
I do not think that such is the
case . . . I am sure that every
ethnic group including the Jews
wants the war stopped and our
veterans returned home.
I feel justified in saying that the
great majority of our people are
against the war . . . and are letting
our country know just how they
feel . . .
