`Complete Sellout' by Sadat Told by St. John at JNF Event
who had proclaimed Goldie Adler
Day in Southfield, presented the
honoree with the seal of his city.
Greetings from the Jewish Welfare
Federation of Detroit were brought
by its president, Alan Schwartz.
David P. Zack, president of
JNF in Detroit, gave a brief out-
line of the work of the 70-year-
old organization, whose first land
purchase was in 1905 and which
recently planted its 100,000,000th
tree in Israel.
Announcement was made at the
dinner of a $25,000 pledge to JNF
by Joseph and Rose Frenkel for
the planting of a 10,000-tree forest
adjoining the Adler forest.
Other participants in the pro-
gram were Shaarey Zedek Rabbi
Irwin Groner, who delivered the
invocation, and Rabbi Moses Lehr-
man of Cong. Bnai Moshe, who led
the grace after meals. Dr. Leon

SAM BARNETT
A living tribute 'to the memory
of Rabbi Morris Adler and to his
widow Goldie—who insisted that
"Morris is here tonight"—was paid
by more than 500 guests at a testi-
monial dinner last Thursday night,
at which a forest in Israel was
established in the Adler name.
The dinner, held at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek, also marked the 70th anni-
versary of the JNF, described by
the guest speaker as "a little or-
ganization that probably has cre-
ated more beauty in this world in
the last 70 years than has any
other."
The speaker, Robert St. John,
was introduced by dinner chair-
man Philip Slomovitz as "a liber-
tarian" — referring to St. John's
strong Zionist ties over the past
quarter century. It is a love for
Israel which the Christian jour-
nalist and author revealed many
times during the course of his
talk.
St. John was not optimistic about
the political situation in the Middle
East. "In Washington," he said,
"it's more clear daily that Anwar
Sadat has sold out completely to
the Russians . . that Russia will
have full control of Egypt." Now
that Egypt is a satellite, he added,
Russian arms are arriving in
even greater quantities.
Yet, "Israel is not panicking.
Through her diplomatic channels,
she is letting President Nixon
know that he must make good now
on his promises to Israel — both
actual and implied."
At the same time, St. John said,
"Israel is saying to America and
the rest of the world that she does
not want any American man-
power, any international guaran-
tees nor any foreign intervention."
Back from Yugoslavia, St.
John related an amusing side-
light on the pro-Arab country;
"Yugoslavians love oranges. And
on every one of them," he said,
"is printed in large letters:
JAFFA. But just to show that

Amputee Makes Return
to Stage Amid Applause
TEL AVIV (JTA)—Hanna Meron,
leading Israeli actress, made a
triumphant return to the stage
here Sunday night in "Medea"—
two years after one of her legs was
amputated following a terrorist
attack on an El Al plane at the
Munich airport. She had thought
her career was ended, but Sunday
night cabinet ministers, Knesset
members, army officers and Is-
raeli theatergoers applauded her
wildly. The critics cheered, too.
