Cathy Winston Bride Selig Assails Lack
of Canadian, Mr. Bowen of Code to Protect
Educators' Tenure
MRS. GEOFFREY BOWEN
Cathy Ann Winston, daughter of
the Andrew Winstons of Circle Dr.,
Flint, became the bride of Geoffrey
Bowen in a noon ceremony Sunday
in the Pick-Durant Hotel's Candle-
ligt Room in Flint.
Mr. Bowen is the son of Mrs.
George Bowen of Vineland, Ont.,
and the late Mr. Bowen.
Officiating was Rabbi Gerald
Schuster of Temple Beth El, Flint.
The bride chose an organza
gown with French Brittany em-
broidery marking sleeves and
hemline. The chapel train fell
from a natural waistline, and
the Camelot headpiece secured
the illusion veiling, appliqued
with petaled flower embroidery.
She carried a Flemish nosegay. -
Maid of honor was Sally Ellen
Winston, the bride's sister. Brides-
maids were Terry Winston, Nancy
Kantor of Oak Park, Mrs. James
Taylor of Hamilton, Ont. and
Lindsey Palm.
The bridegroom's brother, Ron-
ald Clark of Hamilton, was best
man. Ushers were Larry Jones of
Medina, N.Y., Richard Swayze of
Indiana, Henry Myderwick of
Hamilton and George Dykstra of
St. Catherines, Ont.
After a honeymoon in Indiana,
the couple plans to live in St.
Catherines

The Jewish Educators Council of
Metropolitan Detroit, including
Flint and Windsor, held a lunch-
eon reception at Cong. Beth Sha-
lom for colleagues who are leaving
Detroit.
They include Barry Bank, direc-
tor of education and youth at Adas
Shalom, who has accepted a new
position in Orlando; Rabbi Aaron
Brander, director of education and
youth at Cong. Bnai David, who
has accepted a position in Queens;
and Albert Elazar, superintendent
of the United Hebrew Schools, who
is retiring.
The chairman, Sidney Selig,
said it is "unfortunate that Jew-
ish schools in our community
have not seen fit to adopt the
Code of Personnnel Practice of
the Jewish Educators Council for
directors of education and there-
by assure the continuity and
stability of the educational lead-
ership of its schools."
He continued: "They have not
provided for tenure of office after
successful administrative years of
service or provided other reason-
able professional incentives now in
common practice in most commun-
ities, whereas conversely, militant
teachers' unions have been shower-
ed with these and other benefits."
Selig asked how long would the
community "give lip-service to
Jewish education and ignore the
legitimate reasonable professional
obligations toward the full-time
professional directors of Jewish
education. When will our commun-
ity recognize the acute crisis that
now exists with seven full-time
professionals in leadership roles in
Jewish education having left this
community in less than two school
years?"

ant on Housing and Urban Affairs,

gations, chairs of the committee

tion problems in New York City.

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
Friday, June 25,1971-33
BNEI BRAK (ZINS)—Bnei Brak
rabbis have issued a proclamation,
according to the Israel daily
Hatzofe, deploring ostentation and
lavishness at Jewish weddings and
Bar Mitzva celebrations. It ad-
monishes the predominantly ortho-
dox community to conduct its "sim-
has" with modesty and restraint.
The rabbinate cites the precedent
of a similar decree issued by the
"Four Nation Council" in Poland
as an earlier period of great stress
in Jewish life. The rabbis urge
modesty and austerity in dress as
well as in food.
