Israel Debt to Rise
With Defense Outlays

TEL-AVIV (ZINS)—Quoting well
informed circles, the afternoon
daily Yediot Ahronot reports that,
by 1975, Israel's foreign currency
debt will jump from its present
level of $3 billion to $51/2 billion.
This is the inevitable result, the
paper writes, of an insistent need
to go all out fir more defense pro-
- duction, which will require astro-
nomical outlays of capital.
The report calls attention to the
fact that military supplies from
the United States are not obtained
without cost. American equipment
is very expensiys, and Israel pays
the full price .ffr it, even though
terms of payment are favorable
and convenient. Local authorities
are convinced that in the next six
to seven years it will be possible
to fabricate in Israel about all of
the modern, sophisticated weaponry
needed in today's warfare. But
this will entail enormous invest-
ment and expenditure.
The assumption is there will be
no easing of political pressures,
and that the security problem will
remain acute. Incurring a larger
dollar debt is seen as an inevitable
consequence.
