3-Year Program Beguax-
for Aged, Handicaped
in Development Town
NEW YORK — Beit Shemesh,
some 15 miles southwest of Jerusa-
lem, has been selected as the site
of a three-year demonstration
project to provide community
social and medical services for the
aged and handicaped of a develop-
ment town, it was announced last
week by Samuel L. Haber, execu-
tive vice chairman of the Joint
Distribution Committee.
The first such project undertaken'
in one of Israel's 28 development
towns, it will be conducted by the
Association for the Planning and
Development of Services for the
Aged, Haber said.
The association, established in
1969 with financial and technical
assistance from Malben, the JDC
program in Israel, has allocated
IL 300,000 ($86,000) for the project.
It will be carried out jointly by
experts of the JDC/Malben staff
and the recently formed Beit She-
mesh Association for the Aged, he
added.
The major aim of the project
is to provide some 450 needy
aged and handicaped persons,
mostly of North African origin,
with medical and social services
that will enable them to continue
to live at home, Haber said.
Wherever possible, the services
will be offered through existing
local health and welfare agen-
cies.
Among the first steps to be taken
were improved medical and dental
care, expansion of home care
services and the establishment of
a new club for the aged.
