Two Spitzes—Swimming Champs

By JESS SILVER

laurels. He's got competition in
his own family.
Mark's 17-year-old kid sister,
Nancy, finally came of age. While
Mark, an Indiana junior, was hav-
ing his troubles in the National
AAU indoor championships at Pull-
man, Wash., Nancy achieved a
breakthrough by winning her first
individual national championship
in the 200-yard freestyle with a
clocking of 1:55.83. She won by a
touch.
Miss Spitz, long, lean and bronze,
swims for the Arden Hills Club in
California. Since before she can
remember, she has always lived
in the reflected brilliance of her
big brother.
Nancy is no stranger to interna-
tional competition. Her first expe-
rience abroad was in the Macca-
bia Games in 1969, which parallels
Mark's debut in 1965. And like her
brother, she mopped up, winning
four gold medals in Israel. But
any similarity between the two
stops there.

Nancy lost her first race in Is-
rael by a touch, and there was
no way she could have hidden
her feelings. The gloom on her
face could be seen across the
pool. But before she climbed out
of the water, Mark was at her
side, consoling her, talking it up,
of f e r in g encouragement. The
close relationship between the
two overrode any sibling rivalry,
real or imagined.

When the Spitz kids, affection-
ately called "The Schpritzes" in
Israel, returned home, both con-
tinued their swimming careers.
But it really wasn't until 1970 that
Nancy began to make major head-
way. At the end of the year, her
name appeared in every freestyle
event in the list of 25 best USA
marks.
Nancy Spitz is a definite possi-
bility to win an Olympic gold
medal, and with Mark also shoot-
ing for the Munich Games, it is
logical to assume that she has set
her sights on that goal, too.
If it comes to pass and both win
Olympic gold medals, the man who
must share much of the credit is
Jack Abramson of New York.
Abramson is the swimming com-
mittee chairman of the United
States Committee Sports for Is-
rael, which traditionally sponsors
USA participation in the World
Maccabia Games. It was Abram-
son who first picked Mark and
Nancy, virtual unknowns, for trips
abroad, just as he did Marilyn
Ramenofsky in 1961. By 1964, Mari-
lyn was a world record holder in
the 400-meter freestyle and an
Olympic silver medalist.

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL words

in the world ... its our's mother's
birthday again . . .That wonderful
Yiddishe momma of ours, Mrs.
Minnie Raskin, will be 86 years
young this Thursday . . . and we'll
be celebrating with sisters Lil and
Belle and brother Mary . . . as she
blows out the candles that have
made hers and our wishes come
true each year . . . Mom is one
of the sort of great gals you
hear about but don't believe exist

and keep you for many more years
to come . . . we all love you!

FOR THE FIRST TIME in his
life, Julius Chajes was forced to
use his first name on a program
so that the audience would know
who the composer was . .. It hap-
pened at the student recital at the
Jewish Community Center last
week . • . when Julius' six-year-old
son Jeffrey played his own com-
position. Young Jeffrey has forced
the change . . . now that there
are two composing Chajes!

WE'LL JOIN THE bandwagon
of Charley Manos, Detroit News
columnist, that the Detroit Tigers
will win in their division this year.

WHEN BENSON LEET, parade

July 4 parade, this year comme-
morating the 25th Anniversity of
Oak Park, gives the starting sig-
nal, men and women in vafying
uniforms will move into the -line of
march . . . With cadence set by
their commanders, these veterans
of wars past, ranging in age from
3g to 80, will throw their shoulders
back, grip the colors tightly, and -
step out to once more relive' the
days when marching to them waS--
an every day affair.

FISHING TOGETHER at the

couldn't figure it out . . . Sam had
been having excellent luck, land-

wasn't doing as good . . . Sam
asked what the matter could be,
that they were at the same place

same kind of bait . . . "Search

$20,000 in Israel Trips

CHICAGO (JTA) — The Jewish
Welfare Fund of Chicago has
granted scholarships, totaling ap-
proximately $20,000 to 41 Jewish
high school and college students
in the metropolitan area to enable
them to participate in study-work
programs in Israel this summer.
Raymond Epstein, president, ex-
plained that the JWF scholarship
fund was established to assist and
encourage Jewish young people to
visit Israel under properly spon-
sored educational and youth pro ,,
gram auspices.
The plan is designed to enhance
the students' knowledge of He-
brew, of Judaism and of the state
of Israel and, thereby, to strength-
en their commitment to Jewish
life.
