Kol Aini Elects
Gerald Freedman

Temple Kol Ami's fifth annual
meeting resulted in the election of
Gerald Freedman as president.
Other officers are: vice presi-
dents, Howard Packman and Irv-
ing Protetch; secretary, Mrs. Wal-
ter Ambinder; treasurer, Bob
Friedman; and board members,
Mrs. Eugene Snider, Ira Anes, Ir-

Philadelphia Cantor to Be
at Beth Achim Service

The dedication service for the
new home of Birmingham Temple
will be held 8:30 p.m. June 25 at
28611 W. Twelve Mile, Farmington.
The first congregation of Hu-
manistic Judaism, Birmingham
Temple was founded eight years
ago by eight families and Rabbi
Sherwin Wine.
Two other congregations, one in
Deerfield, Ill., and the other in
Westport, Conn., share the non-
theistic philosophy of the Birming-
ham Temple. In 1970, the Society

The new temple is situated on
seven acres. Its low profile and
informality emphasize "the earth-
centered and human-centered ap-
proach of the temple philosophy."
The auditorium sanctuary will
be used for public services, private
ceremonies and educational meet-
ings.
Unlike conventional synagogues,
the focal point of the room is the
sculpted Hebrew word adam
("man") which replaces the tra-
ditional ark of the Torah.
The new Birmingham Temple
was built at a cost of $210,000. It
was designed by the architectural
firm of Tobocman and Lawrence
and constructed by the Nelson Or-
ganization.
On June 27, there will be an
open house for the community
from 1 to 5 p.m. The public is

M. M. Kanter
Honored in Senate

Rabbi Morton M. Kanter gave
the opening prayer at the U.S.
Senate on June 9 and his theme
was based on Psalm 34:14: "Seek
peace and pursue it."
In the course of that day's
proceedings, Senator Robert Grif-
fin, who had arranged for Rabbi
Kanter to give the opening prayer,
paid honor to the visiting rabbi
and recalled the early history of
Temple Beth El of Detroit.
Senator Griffin recalled the role
that was played in Detroit by the
late Dr. Leo M. Franklin and the
position now held in Temple Beth
El by his successor, Rabbi Richard
Hertz.

Named by Temple Israel

Congregation Beth Hillel sponsored its annual Israel Bond event
Sunday evening, and $36,000 worth of bonds were sold. The appeal
was made by Louis Levitan, regional Israel Bond director. At the
event (from left) are Mrs. Sigmund Lowenthal, Sigmund Lowenthal,
who received the Israel Shalom Award; and Hermann Strassburger;
standing, Joey Russell, the evening's entertainer, and Rabbi Joel J.
