Cash Payments Provide WA Assistance; Unsolicited Contacted for Allied Drive Payments on Allied Jewish Cam- paign-I s r a el Emergency Fund pledges have enabled the Jewish Welfare Federation to rush $1,050,- 000 to the United Jewish Appeal in the past month. Following a plea by the United Jewish Appeal national chairman, Paul Zuckerman, and Detroit cash mobilization committee chairman, Louis Berry, contributors have been sending checks or bringing cash into the Fred M. Butzel Building campaign offices. Chairman Berry said that "con- tributors are paying their 1971 pledges in part or in full and some people are even making payments on their 1972 anticipated pledges to make sure that Israel's people do not suffer because there are no dollars available now when they need them. "Don't make them wait. You promised to help build schools for Israel's children. You promised 50,000 immigrants a chance for a new life this year. You promis- ed to help Israel's aged and in- firm live in dignity. Judge Tannenwald will speak on "United States and Israel—Com- mon Interests Amid Changing Perspectives." A judge of the U.S. Tax Court and a former special assistant to the U.S. secretary of state, Judge Tannenwald was a member of President Kennedy's Task Force on Foreign Assistance. As such he was responsible for drafting the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, which encompassed the U.S.' entire foreign assistance program. Judge Tannenwald also has been special consultant to the secretary of war, consultant to the secretary of defense and assistant director of the Mutual Security Administra- tion. Ben Rubenfaers to Be Honored for Services to Youth THEODO:RE TANNENWALD Humphrey to Talk in Donin's Honor for Bar-Ilan U. ises can mean a brighter future for the people of Israel. Don't make them wait," Berry pleaded. He pointed out that the end of the year was traditionally the time that pledges were paid up but that this year "we need December's money in June." At the same time, Campaign Chairmen Meyer M. Fishman and Max M. Shaye were urging solicitation of the remaining prospects for the 1971 campaign who had not been able to make a pledge earlier in the year. Letters were sent by the chair- men to people who had not yet been heard from this year asking for voluntary pledges. "Asking for pledges by letter is not our first choice," Fishman and Shaye said. "We like to have a volunteer solicitor visit with each contributor to tell just what the need is so he will understand how important his contribution is. "However, volunteers cannot possibly reach everyone so we are hopeful that the Jewish community reads the headlines and •the stories of Israel's need, and is aware of the responsibility of taking care of our people overseas and at home. We are depending on the individual to make a pledge appropriate to his circumstances and the vast needs confronting the Jewish peo- ple." Pledges and payments may be sent to Allied Jewish Campaign- Israel Emergency Fund, 163 Madi- son, Detroit, Mich. 48226. MR. and MRS. BEN RUBENFAER: The scholarship dinner scheduled by Mishkan Israel.
