Hands Across the Chasm THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Elazar Retires as Superintendent of UHS; Is Succeeded by Dr. Benjamin Yapko On June 29, friends and col- leagues will pay tribute to United Hebrew Schools Superintendent Albert Elazar, who is retiring after 23 years' service to the UHS and the community. A reception, tendered by the of- ficers and board of directors of the United Hebrew Schools and the Midrasha, College of Jewish Studies, will be held 8 p.m. in the. LaMed Auditorium. Early in his career at the UHS, Elazar played an important role in the establishment of the Midra- sha. He has been instrumental in furthering partnership relations with a number of synagogues in the community, as well as in pro- viding guidance and assistance to the independent Jewish schools in the area. In addition, the UHS and the synagogues of metropolitan Detroit have coperated in estab- lishing the requirement that Bar Mitzva candidates attend a Hebrew school for five years. Elazar was an organizer of the _ Detroit Board of License, estab- lished in 1966 to set minimum standards for teachers in the Hebrew schools. During his administration, the Summer Collegiate Institute at the Hebrew University was established, in July 1969. This study program, sponsored by the Center for Jewish Education and Culture of the Jew- ish Agency, the Hebrew Univer- sity and the Midrasha, provides American and Canadian students with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of Israel.
