Plight of Czech Jews Revealed in Saturday Review

Local Timber Saves Israel
Million in Foreign Cash

Of the 320,000 Jews who lived in
Czechoslovakia before World War
II, only 15,000 survived; and these
are now the target of a virulent
anti-Semitic campaign, the Satur-
day Review reports.
In an article titled "Prague
Spring '71," author Horace Sutton
writes: "The Czech press echoes
the anti-Zionist line pushed by the
Kremlin, and there is some won-
der whether the trials of the de-
fendants now in prison in Lenin-
grad, Kishinev and Odessa, as well
as in Riga, will have a reflection
here.
"The Soviet invasion of Czecho-
slovakia was accompanied by an
*-Semitic campaign launched
ltaneously in Warsaw, East
Berlin and Moscow and aided by

driven out in the reform," Sutton
explains. "Czechs and Slovaks who
had German-sounding names were
vilified in a fraudulent letter-writ-
ing campaign to the newspapers as
progenitors of a Western-influ-
enced, Zionist-engineered revision-
ism. They, so the campaign went,
were the true architects of the
reform."
Non-Jews, such as Foreign Min-
ister Jiri Hajek, who appeared at
the United Nations in defense of
his country, were given trumped-

up Jewish names in press dis-
patches, the article continues. Prof.

Eduard Goldstuecker, "head of the
Writers' Union, a prominent Jew,
was called a 'Zionist hyena' who
`should have been given the rope
along with Slansky.' "
In another instance, "Dr. Fran-
tisek Kriegel, veteran of the Span-
ish Civil War and a member of
the party Presidium who had ac-
companied (Ludvik) Svoboda in
their meeting with the Russians,
had been called a 'Galician Jew'
and told to shut up in the meetings
at Cierna in July. At the later

meeting in Moscow he was mana-
cled and not admitted to the con-
ference table at all. There was
talk of staging an anti-Zionist trial
in Prague with Goldstuecker and
Kriegel as defendants."
Sutton ascribes the anti-Semitic
wave to a desire by those in auth
ority to shift "the blame for mis-
takes to some phantom alien force
whose allegiance is elsewhere."
The publication also states, "For
the humiliation of the invasion the
Russians are loathed. For the
young here is hopelessness and for
the elderly, resignation."
The article appears in the Satur-
day Review issue of June 5.
