Weisgal, principal architect and chief executive offi- cer of the institute from its begin- nings until his retirement at the end of 1969, at age 75. The book has been published as the culmi- nating event in the year-long cele- bration of the institute's 25th anni- versary, which ended in December. Stephen Spender, noted Brit- ish poet and essayist, contributes the lead article, "A Center of Critical Values"; Nigel Calder, distinguished British writer, au- thor and editor, contributes an essay "Rehovot in Perspective." Other contributors are: Israel President Zalman Shazar, who wrote a preface to the book; Dr. Albert B. Sabin, developer of the Sabin oral polio vaccine, president of the Weizmann Institute of Sci- ence since January 1970; Dr. Isaac Berenblum, internationally re- nowned cancer authority, who heads the institute's department of experimental biology. A short history of the Weizmann Institute is by Rinna Samuel, au- thor and free-lance journalist who is editor of the Rehovot institute's magazine. The book also contains the roll of honorary fellows of the institute, 76 in 1970, of whom 19 are Nobel Laureates. Spender sees the Weizmann In- stitute as "being primarily dedi- cated to science in its most disin- terested, purest form, representing the role that Israel may . play in the Middle East, if and when there is peace .. . It builds a bridge be- yond specialization to the life of which science is only a part." Dr. Berenblum, reflecting on 21 years of association with the Weizmann Institute since 1949, attributes its attainment and sta- ture in the forefront of the inter- national scientific community, to *he standards set up by Dr. Weiz- mann; the organizational genius of Meyer W. Weisgal and the "freedom from scientific direc- tion from above, enjoyed by in- stitute scientists." Dr. Calder selects for citation pioneering contributions by Weiz- mann Institute scientists in the fields of: cancer research, protein research, immunology, chemistry, plant genetics, birth control, deciphering the pattern of the vi- brations of the earth and the oceantides, new membranes for de- salination, chemistry of the brain, magnetism in medicine, a mecha- no-chemical engine duplicating hu- man muscle contraction and the body's energy conversion system, techniques for enlarging water re- sources and for enabling better climate prediction, for making new compounds and new drugs, explor- ation of the nature of matter, and computerology.
