Beth Israel Pushes Plans for Building

tors Wednesday. This will allow for
a ground breaking on the property
Goren-Koch Wedding
Held in Owosso Garden
MRS. KALMAN GOREN
A wedding trip to Nassau fol-
lowed the Sunday afternoon wed-
ding of Miriam Sue Koch to Kal-
man Gideon Goren at the home of
the bride's parents, the Milton Je-
rome Kaufmans of Seventh St.,
Owosso. Rabbi Hillel Millgram and
Cantor Abraham Ranani of Cong.
Beth Israel officiated at the gar-
den ceremony.
The bridegroom is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Phillip Goren of Detroit.
Carrying a small Bible with
miniature sweetheart roses and
Stephanotis, the bride was gown-
ed in English net over silk or-
ganza with re-embroidered Alen-
con lace touched with seed
pearls. The gown featured short
sleeves, a high•rise neckline and
Empire waist, as well as a
chapel train. The shoulder veil
of English net was secured with
a matching Dior bow.
Matron of honor was Mrs. David
Helfman, and bridesmaids were
Linda Schafer and Mrs. Bruce Fin-
silver, both of the Detroit area.
Arthur V. Liss of Detroit was best
man, and ushers were the bride-
groom's brothers Aaron Goren of
Detroit and Dr. Hershel Goren of
Shaker Heights, O.
Also in the wedding party were
the bride's grandmothers, Mrs.
Meyer Vinacow of Flint, escorted
by her son, Arthur, and Mrs. Al-
bert Kaufman, escorted by Leon
Kaufman.
at Calkins and Dye Rd. in- mid-
July. The present building at Oren
and Hamilton Rds. will be vacated
at the end of June.
The building fund campaign,
chaired by Julian Feiler, is under
way, with Dr. Feiler and his com-
mittee obtaining financial commit-
ments from the membership. Plan-
ning sessions and meetings have
been initiated.

Hadassah will hold a garden
party 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the
home of Mrs.- Peter Kronick, 1185
Nanbru. The program will feature
a showing of signed limited edition
graphics by old and modern mas-
ters, as well as pieces from the
private collection of John Smitteri-
gen. Chairmen of the event are
Mrs. Nelson Schafer, Mrs. Lewis
Sanford and Mrs. Arthur Silver-
man. Proceeds will go to supplies
for the Hadassah Hospital in Jeru-
salem.
Last Canipaign
Effort Urged
Murray Moss, chairman of the
Flint United Jewish Appeal Cam-
paign, urges all workers with
cards outstanding to turn them
in. "One-hundred per cent returns
are particularly vital this year,'
said Moss, and we need one final
effort to achieve our goal before
summer begins."

was hosted last week by the bridegroom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Philip
Goren of Detroit, at the Country Squire Restaurant, Flushing. Members
of the wedding party and out-of-town guests joined the families of
Miriam Koch and Kalman Goren.

Mrs. Michael Melet has been in-
stalled as president of the Flint
Area Parent-Child Nurseries. A
former kindergarten teacher at
Michigan School for the Deaf, Mrs.
Melet will direct the program,
which began in 1951 and now has
24 locations. The nurseries provide
group play experiences for children
3-5, and parents participate as
teacher aides.

Award Two Grants to
Weizmann Professor
REHOVOT—Two research grants
from the U.S. National Institutes
of Health totaling nearly $145,-
000 for one year have been re-
• yed by Prof. Leo Sachs, Meyer-
31 Professor of Biology at the
Weizmann Institute of Science and
head of its genetics department.
He was cited for his studies on the
membrane of cells, and the bio-
chemical events responsible for the
induction of cancer by chemicals.
The National Institutes of Health
have invited Prof. Sachs to join
other well-known researchers at
its Bethesda, Md. headquarters as
a John Fogarty Scholar. Fogarty
Scholars pursue their individual re-
search and, in addition, consider
the philosophic, social, economic
or legal issues raised by current
advances in biomedical research.
Other Fogarty Scholars from the
Weizmann Institute were Prof.
Uriel Z. Littauer of the department
of chemistry and Prof. I. I. Beren-
blum, head of the institute's de-
partment of experimental biology,
who is currently in residence at
the NIH.
