HAPPINESS . . . to one young
man at least . . . is driving a
Checker Bar-B-Q delivery truck
about 5:30 p.m. recently, turning
off Marlow onto Nine Mile in Oak
Park . . . while playing a harmon-
ica . . . Kind of dangerous, too!
DAVE STOFFER is slowly get-
ting back on the mend after three
months at Mayo Clinic and double
hip surgery . . . Get well wishes
from all your friends, Dave.
PARENTS ASSOCIATION for
Jewish Residential Care is $2,000
closer toward its goal of a home
for retarded children . . . thanks
to the over-600 folks who ate, drank
and made merry at the beautiful
testimonial honoring Sammy Woolf
. It was a great evening for a
great guy and a great cause!
SHERUTH LEAGUE 28th-year
installation luncheon will have
Mary Adler (Mrs. Irving) taking
over as president for a second
term . . . One of the features will
be a fashion show narrated by Max
Sosin (funny!) with clothes sup-
plied by Birmingham's Ruth Ham-
burger . . . It'll be this Tuesday,
12:30 p.m. at Town and Country
Club . . . Joyce Dorfman (Mrs.
Saul) is chairman, 353-9043 . . .
Sheruth League is embarking on a
new venture of camping at Sheruth
Village in Camp Tamarack for
emotionally - disturbed underprivi-
leged children. from Hawthorn
Center.
'REVA AND MORRIS EISEN-
BERG thought they were going to
a birthday surprise for son-in-law
Michael White . . . Turned out to
be a surprise 25th wedding anni-
versary party given by their chil-
dren, daughter Marsha and Mi-
chael, and daughter Adele and Joe
Frascella.
OVER 800 YOUNGSTERS and
56 teams celebrated "opening
day" in the Oak Park baseball
opener . . . with proof that Coun-
cilman-Mayor pro-tem Mert Col-
burn and Sol Chudnow, president
of the Oak Park Council of Com-
munity Organizations, need plen-
ty of practice . . . Mert pitching
and Sol catching the first ball ...
It's the 20th year and co-spon-
sored now by the Oak Park Jay-
cees, President Mike Hechtman,
and the department of parks,
recreation and forestry.
PHIL AND ESTHER BRODIE
will be moving back to Detroit
from Pittsburgh in about a month
. . . Max Haidy is in his 28th year
with Brown & Bigelow Elaine
Lewis isn't afraid of anything—liv-
ing or not—that is, except cats .. .
wonder why . . . Hubby Sol purrs
like a kitten when they're together.
LOOKING BACK ON OUR col-
umns of Yesteryear . . . Aug. 10,
1951 . . . "As lightning flashed
through a torrent of rain, flooding
many areas in its path, the 30-year-
old Clairmount streetcar line made
its final run and became a part of
Detroit history . . . leaving a lump
in the throat of Harry Dashkin, last
remaining Jewish conductor, as he
tearfully bid goodby to all his pa-
trons . . • while recalling that in
his 27 years service with the DSR
he had faithfully served four gen-
erations of Detroiters . . . And for
our box of souvenirs, Harry sends
four transfers going east and west,
as mementos of the last day's run
of the Clairmount streetcar line
that had once been known as the
"Belle of the Rails."
