THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 18—Friday, June 4, 1971 Jewish Book Award Winners Rabin to Resign as Envoy to U.S. It has now been established: Itzhak Rabin is due to resign as Israel's ambassador to the United States, a post he held since his retirement as chief of staff of the Israel Army, the position he oc- cupied during the Six-Day War. Who'll succeed him? The current issue of Newsweek, under the heading "General Dayan, Meet General Rabin," stated: "Israel Prime Minister Golda Meir's real reason for bringing Ambassador Itzhak Rabin back from the U.S. is to counterbalance the prestige of Defense Minister Moshe Dayan, hero of the 1948 and 1956 wars, as the cabinet's military expert. Rabin, who will be minister of development, a now-vacant post, was chief of staff and hero of the 1967 war. Candi- dates to replace him in Washinton include military intelligence chief Gen. Aharon Yariv, UN Ambas- sador Yosef Tekoah and Aviezer Chelouch, a banker and somtime Israeli ambassador to Nigeria." Winners of the awards presented by the National Jewish Wel- fare Board's Jewish Book Council of America for outstanding books of Jewish interest published in the United States during 1970 are, (from left): Rabbi Ephraim Oshry of New York, recipient of the $500 Leon Jolson Award for the best book on the Nazi Holocaust for "Sheelot u-Teshuvot: mi-Maamakim" (Responsa: From the Depths); Mrs. Sonia Levitin, Morage, Calif., winner of the $500 Charles and Bertie G. Schwartz Award in the Jewish juvenile book category for "Journey to America"; Mrs. Ruth Finer Mintz, Los Angeles, winner of the $500 Florence and Harry Kovner Memorial Award for the best volume of Jewish poetry for "Traveler Through Time;" and Rabbi Mordecai M. Kaplan of New York City, 90-year-old theologian and founder of the Reconstructionist movement, given the $500 Frank and Ethel E. Cohen Award for the outstanding book on Jewish thought, "The Religion of Ethical Nationhood," as well as for his cumulative contributions to Jewish literature. Education Ministry to Aid Panthers; Split Develops in Ranks of Militants Jewish Profs Asked to Affirm Link With Zionism in 13 Educators' Letter NEW YORK—Thousands of Jew- ish college professors are being asked to affirm their identifica- tion with "Zionism as a movement of Jewish liberation and cultural renascence" by a group of 13 noted American academicians, headed by Professor Milton R. Konvitz of Cornell University. In a letter sent to Jewish college professors throughout the coun- try, it was pointed out that "the time has come to condemn forth- rightly efforts to discredit the Jewish people and the state of Is- rael through blatant anti-Zionist propaganda." Prof. Konvitz and his 12 co-sign- ers, said in their letter that the affirmation will be issued as a public declaration so that we can "repudiate the distortion of Zion- ism, and so reject the insidious attempts to separate the interests of the Jewish people from the state of Israel and their fellow Jews in the Soviet Union." In addition to Prof. Konvitz, the authors of the affirmation are: Salo Baron, Columbia University; Marvin H. Bernstein, Princeton University; Haim Ginott, New York University; Abraham J. Heschel, Jewish Theological Sem- inary; Horace Kallen, New York School for Social Research; Peter B. Kenen, Columbia University; Arthur Kornberg, Stanford Univer- sity; Seymour M. Upset, Harvard University; Albert Sabin, Board of Trustees, New York University; Judah Shapiro, Hebrew Union College, N.Y.; Ruth G. Weintraub, Hunter College, City University of NY; and Elie Wiesel, noted author and lecturer.
