Summer Fun
for Youngsters
at Maccabee

Camp Maccabee, reorganized
under the direction of Mrs. James
Hallem and Mrs. Albert Binder,
is distributing a flyer detailing
camp objectives and activities to
the entire Council mailing list. The
season is scheduled for July 6-23.
The change to Temple Beth El
as a centrally located site was
made because of the length of
travel time to the former site,
Sherwood Forest. Transportation
will be provided by each camper.
Most campers, as indicated in
the Council population study of
1967, are age 4-10, with the
majOrity of potential registrants
4-6. This will be the children's
first experience in a Jewish Com-
munity Council facility.
An enriched fun experience pro-
gram is being planned, with spe-
cial emphasis on Israeli music. A
traditional Sabbath program will
be held each Friday, with an oneg
Shabat following. Each week there
will be a twilight song fest, in-
volving the campers' families and
members of the community. Field
trips for training in swimming,
howling, golf and nature studies
are planned.
A pilot program for teen-agers
will be held, featuring rap ses-
sions and Israeli songs.
The camp also will provide op-
portunities for leadership devel-
opment, with its counselor-in-
training program for children
age 13-15. Applications are being
accepted. Volunteers have offer-
ed their skills in baking, pup-
petry, photography, storytelling,
health, biology and sport instruc-
tion. As of this date, over 50
campers have registered.
Carl Rittman, youth adviser, an-
nounced a new athletic program
for children age 13-15. There will
be daily training in basketball and
volleyball, noon-5 p.m. during
July 6-23. Additional information
will be mailed to all teens.
A Canadian camping trip for 12
physically fit boys age 14-16 will
take place at the end of August,
in conjunction with Camp Tama-
rack. Participants in this wilder-
ness hike will spend five days in
Northern Canada and will be se-
lected from athletic program par-
ticipants.
For additional information on
Camp Maccabee, the teen athletic
program and the wilderness trip,
call the Council office, 767-5922.

Rivka Aleksandrovich, mother of
Soviet Jewish prisoner Ruth Alek-
sandrovich, will speak at Woodside
Church, Flint, at a meeting 5 p.m.
Wednesday arranged by the Flint
Interfaith Action Council.
On March 19. the Action Coun-
cil, comprised of Christian clergy-
men, picketed a Soviet dance group
on a Friday night so that Jews
would not violate the Sabbath.
"Ruth Aleksandrovich is well
known to the Jewish community,"
stated Dr. Jack Stanzler, com-
munity relations committee chair-
man. "Many of us have written
to the USSR about her plight," he
said, "The willingness of non-Jews

Presidents Dinner
to Acquint Heads of
Agencies
With Council
t,

Incoming presidents of constitu-
ent agencies of the Flint Jewish
Community Council will be the
Council's guests at a Presidents
dinner 7 p.m. June 9 at the Phoe-
nix Club.
According to Alfred Klein, presi-
dent of the Flint Jewish Commun-
ity Council, the purpose of the din-
ner is .to acquaint new presidents
with the Council structure, proj-
ects, administration and its prob-
lems. Chairmen of standing com-
mittees will give brief presenta-
tions, and questions will be an-
swered.
"We feel that with a good under-
standing of the Council and its
purposes and problems, the presi-
dents will take great care in se-
lecting their delegates, and each
constituent group will demonstrate
greater participation," Klein said.
