MONTREAL (JTA)—A Canadian
Jewish population expert has esti-
mated that the Jewish population
has grown from about 250,000 in
1964 to an estimated 300,000 in
1971.
The data, prepared by Louis
Rosenberg, research director emer-
itus of the Canadian Jewish Con-
gress and research consultant, was
reported in the Inter-Office Infor-
mation bulletin of the CJC and
Bnai Brith.
Rosenberg indicated he based
his figures on the official census
data for 1961, plus official govern-
ment statistics on Jewish immi-
grants for the years 1961-1966,
described as "the only ones avail-
able," plus his estimates for 1967-
1970, as well as the assumption
that the rate of natural increase
was about the same as for the
period of 1955-1960. He said that
was the latest period for which
statistics were available. The prov-
ince with the largest number of
Jews, both in 1961-109,344—and in
1971-131,700—was Ontario.
The smallest were Prince Ed-
ward Island and the Northwest
Territories and Yukon. Each was
listed as having 22 Jewish inhabit-
ants in 1961 and 20 in 1971. Metro-
politan Montreal was the city listed
as having the largest number of
Jews in both years — 102,724 and
113,000. Metropolitan Halifax, with
1,186 in 1961 and 1,200 in 1971, was
the city with the smallest number
of Jews.
