• THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, May 28, 1971-47 Chief 'Rabbi Khadourie of Iraq Dies; Gov't Guarded His Public Statements LONDON (JTA) - Chief Rabbi Sassoon Khadourie of Iraq died in Baghdad Monday at age 91, ac- cording to information reaching here. He was the spiritual leader of a Jewish community that had dwinl dled from 150,000 to 3,000 during Max Lowenthal, 1950 FBI Critic NEW YORK-Max Lowenthal, a local attorney who served congres- sional committees in the 1930s-40s and who wrote a criticism of the FBI in 1950, died here at age 83. Because of his book, "The Fed- eral Bureau of Investigation" Low- enthal was ordered before the H o u s e Un-American Activities Committee in 1950 and was called a "menace to the best interests of America" by Michigan Republican Representative George A. Dondero. In a New York Times book re- view, Lowenthal's book was called the result of "immense research and careful documentation . . . al- most for the first time . . . it pulled aside the self-righteous cloak in which the FBI has wrapped itself." Lowenthal was a personal friend of President Harry S Truman. the 23 years since the establish- ment of Israel. Khadourie was born in Baghdad and served as chief rabbi of Iraq since 1932. In recent years he had spoken out in defense of the Baath- ist regime and against Zionism, claiming that discriminatory treat- ment of Iraqi Jews ended when the present regime took office. But •is public statements were made under the watchful eyes of Iraqi officials who provided Western newsmen with approved translations. The feeling among knowledgable observers was that the aged rabbi was being cruelly exploited by Iraqi authorities for propaganda purposes. In his last statement to the press on April 23, he denounced "Zionist and imperialist propaganda direct- ed against Iraq."
