Lady Reading was honored for "distinguished services which have been an inspiration to other women." LONDON—Stella, Dowager Mar- chioness of Reading, who was ac- tive in the London branch of the World Jewish Congress, died Sun- day at age 77. Lady Reading, long a leader in social reform and British public life, was the first woman to take a seat in the House of Lords, in 1958. Although she was given her own title, she preferred to be known by her husband's name. She was the widow of the first Mar- quess of Reading, viceroy of India and foreign secretary. She was founder and inspira- tion of Britain's Women's Volun- tary Service for Civil Defense and for years a close friend of Mrs. Eleanor- Roosevelt. After her husband's death in 1935, Lady Reading traveled incog- nito through the U. S. She worked as a dishwasher, getting to know the American people. Her trip finally was interrupted by a state trooper who said, "The President wants you to call him." That was the beginning of the deep friend- ship between Lady Reading and Mrs. Roosevelt. She was the first non-American to be awarded the National Achievement Award for Women, in 1948.
