The "missing link" between Is-
rael and Diaspora Jewry in the
area of news dissemination has
been provided by ITIM, the Israeli
news agency that recently formed
an alliance with the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency.
ITIM, the United Israeli Press,
sent its associate editor, Amitai
Mahler, to Montreal on an inaugur-
al flight with Canadian Pacific
Airlines; and on a brief stopover
with relatives in the Detroit area,
he explained the work of ITIM.
Israel's counterpart of United
Press International, ITIM gleans
news from all countries, edits and
translates those items it feels are
of greatest value and then, on a
network of teleprinters, dissemin-
ates it to member papers through-
out Israel.
These papers include some 14 in
Hebrew and six or seven in for-
eign languages, including the Jer-
usalem Post, printed in English.
Radio and television stations also
are serviced.
ITIM is the Israeli agent of
four news agencies, Reuters,
Agence France Presse, UPI
and, now, JTA. The latter al-
liance is only three to four
months old, but Mahler ex-
presses great satisfaction that
"we're getting Jewish news that
we weren't getting before."
The ITIM staff, with Mahler
heading the editing work, includes
12 "on desk," 10 reporters in Tel
Aviv and another dozen or so in
the smaller towns.
Mahler, 55, is a fourth-generation
Israeli, whose • antecedents came
to Palestine with the BILU move-
ment in 1881. Farmers in Russia,
they settled on land bought by
Baron de Rothschild in the Rehovot
area.
Although his paretits still live
there — at Mazkered-Batia —
Mahler left home tp study at New
York University,,!-white he gradu-
ated Phi Beta 'kappa: : in.,1941. He
majored in -Frenclk,and-Itninnreci,.in

his future work.

Mahler has an appropriate:

field," he said.
NY Jewish Federation
Buys $1 Million in Bonds
NEW YORK (JTA) — The pur-
chase of an additional $1,000,000
in State of Israel Bonds has been
authorized by the board of trustees
of the Federation of Jewish Philan-
thropies. This brings the federa-
tion's investment total in Israel
Bonds to $2,000,000.
Its newly-elected president, Law-
rence B. Buttenwieser, in announc-
ing the board's decision on May 10,
noted that the action resulted from
a recommendation of its executive
committee.
The conclusion of the executive
committee, Buttenwieser stated,
was based upon "broad Jewish
communal considerations." An ini-
tial purchase of $1,000,000 of Israel
Bonds was made by the federation
in 1967.
