Reporting on the audience, Al- bert Schlossberg indicated that the Pope was "warm and sympathetic to the problems that Jews are facing, both in the Middle East and the Soviet Union. His Holiness spoke with compassion and au- thority on the present status of Jews in the Soviet Union." Schlossberg also reported the Pope expressed his desire for peace in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
