Hearing Urged on Visas to Soviet Jews

- Congressman
NEW YORK
Emanuel Celler, chairman of the
House Judiciary Committee, was
urged by Bernard Backer, presi-
dent of the Workmen's Circle, "to
call immediate hearings on H.R.
6699 introduced by Congressman
Edward I. Koch and co-sponsored
by over 70 members of the House
to extend U.S. visas to 30,000 Soviet
Jews should they wish to emigrate
to this country."
Backer, in a wire to Celler cited
"the overwhelming humanitarian
concern this nation must exhibit
for those whose cultural, social
and economic persecution because
they are Jews is a matter of public
record."
Backer said that "certainly a
hearing on this bill to determine

Israeli Pilots, Flying
Aid to S. Sudanese,
Face Soviet Airmen

HAMBURG (ZINS)—Israeli air-
men have been matching skills
with Soviet pilots for some time
now, but in the Sudan and not in
Egypt, reports the German weekly
"Der Spiegel."
The Israelis are airlifting arms,
food and medicine to the black
tribes who are being systematically
liquidated under a calculated pol-
icy of the Sudanese regime.

Israelis route their aid through
Abyssinia or Uganda, while the
Soviet . airmen aid the regime by
piloting planes that bombard black
inhabitants in the South Sudan
jungles.
According to Der Spiegel both
sides are loath to give any details
of the contest for reasons best
known to themselves.
