Caesar's, has his own version of
the birth of pizza. "Many believe,
as we do, that pizza had its origin
on the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius, a
scant 15 miles away from sunny
Naples, Italy. In fact, archeologists
were startled to find among the
artifacts of the destroyed city of
Pompeii petrified pizzas that were
in the process of being made when
the volcano exploded. Some arche-
ologists believe that the heat gen-
erated by 5,000 families busy mak-
ing pizzas was responsible for Ves-
uvious blowing its top in the first
place.
"Nevertheless, this crispy, Nea-
politan pie, topped w it h lus-
cious red tomatoes, imported
cheese and all sorts of mouth-
watering meats and seafoods,
came into being by accident. Little
Caesar Pissarello, a baker's assis-
tant in the mountainside town of
Pompeii, returned from the toma-
to fields that abounded on the vol-
cano's slopes with a basketful of
tomatoes one day. As he entered
the bakery where he worked, his
eyes were attracted to a young
girl buying a loaf of bread for
supper. She eyed him roguishly,
at which point Little Caesar
tripped and his load of tomatoes
landed on a large piece of dough
that was being readied for baking.
"When the owner of the bakery
rounded a corner a moment later,
Little Caesar frantically loaded the
dough and tomatoes into the oven
to get it out of sight. With the
owner of the bakery, Little Caesar
and the girl standing around ex-
changing pleasantries, the blend-
ing of dough, tomatoes and heat in
the own emitted heavenly odors
that led to the discovery of the
new • dish. Needless to say, every-
one in the store took to the new
delicacy. So the first Pizzarello
was born.
"In 1600, the name was shortened
to pizza, and cheese was added by
an innovator called Pasquale Mo-
zarella. In future years, all man-
ner of meats were added for
variety."

Stir Hornet's Nest Among
Young Couples and Leftists
TEL AVIV (ZINS)—"The As-
. sociation of Young Married Cou-
ples in Israel" is planning to take
over new housing which has been
set aside for newcomers, accord-
ing to a press report. It is part of
a campaign demanding cheap
housing for young married cou-
ples.
Daniel Nadler, a spokesman, re-
vealed that the Israeli "Black
Panthers" proposed that both
groups unite, with the objective
of carrying out a "common war
against discrimination." Both
groups demand of the government
that they receive precisely the
same privileges as those accorded
new immigrants.
Meanwhile, although the vast
majority of Israelis register
strong approval for all steps to
accommodate new Soviet Olim,
a small vocal minority of leftists
is increasingly critical, accord-
ing to a recent press report.
The leftists claim that the new-
ly arrived Soviet Jews receive
special attention and privileges at
the expense of many disadvantaged
families, who also came as im-
migrants from other parts of the
world.
Gedi Yatziv, a leading New
Leftist, is making political capital
of this issue, protesting that many
poor families of Oriental origin
now in the country are victims of
discrimination. He claims that So-
viet Jews receive better housing,
better facilities and a great deal
more assistance than do other de-
serving newcomers.
