Verdict Imminent in Trial of 9 Jews in Leningrad

Soviet activities. The JTA was in-
formed by telephone from Lenin-
grad that the prosecutor, Mrs.
Inessa Katukova, asked prison
terms ranging from one to 10
years for the defendants. The
sources told JTA that a total of 48
defense witnesses including non-
Jews testified in court. Other
sources place the number of pro-
secution witnesses at 46.
JTA sources insisted that none
of the defendants had made "corn-
plte confessions" as reported by
the Soviet News Agency Tass.
They conceded that some of the
accused pleaded guilty to offenses
of a "purely technical" character
but all denied that they had corn-
mitted any crime against the So-
viet state.
The sentences asked by the pro-
secutor were more lenient than
those demanded at the first Lenin-
grad trial last December when
nine Jews and two non-Jews were
tried and convicted on the same
hijack charges. Mrs. Katukova de-,
manded a 10-year prison term for
Grigory Hillel Butman, 37-year-old
engineer, and eight years for Mik-
hail Korenblit, 34, the two chief
defendants. She asked six years
