In keeping with the Lag b'Omer
custom of having outdor festivi-
ties, Akiva students from, kinder-
garten through 9th grade went to
Major Park. We spent the morning
participating in baseball, soccer,
tennis, races and relays. The kin-
dergarten students also ate a pic-
nic lunch at the park. All of us
had a nice time.
Lag b'Omer is the 33rd da3 , of
the counting of the omer, the 49
days between the holidays of
Pesah and Shavuot. During the
omer period, there was a plague
that killed 24,000 students of Rabbi
Akiva because they did not show
enough respect for each other. On
the 33rd day of the omer the
plague stopped. Also on this day,
Bar Kokhba's army defeated the
Romans. Lag b'Omer is therefore
celebrated as a joyful occasion.
Shavuot, or the festival of the
giving of the Torah, comes seven
weeks after the second day of
Passover. The girls of the 8th and
9th grades are preparing an ori-
ginal Hebrew play by our teacher,
Mrs. Cohen, about the story of
Ruth for a school assembly on
Thursday. We're also enjoying-
making our own costumes for the
play.
