Guild for Blind Dedicates
$7,500,000 Headquarters
NEW YORK (JTA)—The Jewish
Guild for the Blind dedicated its
new 12-story headquarters here
Monday.
The $7,500,000 structure, built
largely through voluntary contri-
butions, will enable the guild to
expand its vocational training pro-
grams and other services for sight-
less persons, according to Aubrey
Mallach, executive director.
Mallach told the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency that there would
be no increase in the guild's staff
of 170, who formerly worked in a
four-story building. Nor did he
anticipate an increase in the 500
individuals who make use of the
guild's services each week.
The additional space, however,_
will permit the guild to inaugurate
food service and hospital service
training programs, among other
things, which will prepare blind
people for a wider range of jobs.
Mallach said that about one-third
of the people availing themselves
of the guild's services have men-
tal or physical handicaps in addi-
tion to being sightless. These do
not include the aged infirm but
they do include children, adoles-
cents and young adults.
The guild maintains a home for
the aged in Yonkers which re-
ceives financial aid from the state.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (JTA) — Two
Jewish coeds, both freshmen, one
at Indiana University and one at
Illinois University, have reported
that at both schools, "there is an
image of the Jews as wealthy,
academic and clannish," and they
added their belief there was an
urgent need to change that image.
Joanne Jacobson of Illinois Uni-
versity and Jeanne Malter of In-
diana University, reported those
findings in an article in the Feb-
ruary issue of Kadima, a - publica-
tion of Jewish student activists at
the Illinois school here;
The coeds reported that many
students, particularly at Indiana
University, "have never known a
JeW." They declared that, at Illi-
nois University, "a luxury dorm
on campus, Bromley Hall, gen-
erally thought of as heavily Jewish,
is often referred to as "Kike's
Peak."
They also asserted there was a
need to establish a Jewish identity
at Indiana University at Bloom-
ington. They declared that Arab
propaganda on the two campuses
was "plentiful" and that opposition
was apparently not organized.
