The longer I live the more keenly I feel that whatever was good enough for our fathers is not good enough for us. —Oscar Wilde CUSTOM TABLE PADS Canonist Forms `Catholic Women for Soviet Jews' Clara Maria Henning. the only woman and lay member of the Canon Law Society of America, who served on the Detroit Arch- diocesan Tribunal for the past two summers, has launched an inter- national movement to aid Jews in the Soviet Union. Miss Henning, 29, said her or- ganization, "Catholic Women for Soviet Jews," is meant to give dynamic support to the movement, "although prominent churchmen have expressed their concern for Soviet Jews." She added: "The Christian churches have been silent far too long in the historical repression of Judaism. They have not exactly been defenders, let alone suppor- ters of Jewish culture," she said. A convert to Catholicism, Miss Henning was born in Germany to "Protestant-agnostic" parents. She and her mother immigrated to the U.S. when Miss Henning was 15. Living in New York, she said, gave her a strong appreciation of the Jewish people, their culture and religion. She received her bachelor of canon law in 1968, a license of canon law the following year and completed her doctoral studies in 1970. While working on the latter, she was a member of the Detroit Archdiocesan Tribunal. Trained in political science and aware of what happened to Euro- pean Jewry in World War II, Miss Henning said she recognizes the process by which a Jewish minor- ity is used in Russia for political ends.
