Israel Bond !Drive Formally Launched in Detroit

Detroit's Israel Bond drive for
1971 was formally launched May 13,
at the dinner co-sponsored by the
Detroit. Zionist Federation at Cong.
Shaarey Zedek.
Louis Berry, who presided, an-
nounced that sales recorded that
night and at events that preceded
that dinner now total $1,060,000.
Pointing to the gravity of the
current situation, Berry made a
strong appeal for unstinted efforts
to double last year's sales and to
assure investments by Detroiters
for the current year in the sum of
S9,1)00,000.
Berry pointed out that the previ-
ous Israel Bond efforts here
brought heartening responses, in-
cluding $2,000,000 :1 investments
by banks, insurance companies and
other financial enterprises. He re-
viewed the accomplishments in Is-
rael with the aid of Bond invest-
ments and said that the creation
of industries in Israel enabled the
assurance of 1.500,000 jobs over a
period of 20 years since the Israel
Bond drive started in this country.
Due to critical situations in Is-
rael, Israel Army Chief Rabbi
Shlomo Goren was unable to come
to Detroit to address the dinner
and the guest speaker was the
noted news commentator, David
Schoenbrun, whose stirring ad-
dress inspired the audience of
more than 300 in mobilizing for
this year's campaign.
Carmi M. Slomovitz, as president
of the Detroit Zionist Federation
under whose auspices the initial
dinner was organized, outlined the
objectives of the new Zionist Fed-

his brother in Toronto, the day be-
fore the dinner. The guest artist
who substituted for him was the
popular opera star Ginetta LaBi-
